ATLANTA – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in a 2-0 setback at Georgia State Sunday afternoon in Atlanta.
The host wasted little time in taking charge in the match as Matthew Fearnley took an assist from Justin Guest just 44 seconds into the contest for a quick 1-0 lead.
That goal turned out to be the only goal the Panthers (8-2 / 3-2 SBC) would need as they posted a shutout over the Chants (4-1 / 4-1 SBC), the first time CCU has been shutout this season.
The scored stood that way until the 29th minute when the Panthers would add another goal, this one from George Proctor on an assist from Ross Finnie.
The score stood 2-0 at the half despite the Chants outshooting Georgia State 12-5 over the first 20 minutes.
The second half was a stalemate as neither team could find the back of the net.
CCU finished the match with a 14-8 edge in shots, but Panthers' goalie Paul Tyson made four saves to preserve the shutout for GSU.
Connor Pugh,
Kazuki Kimura,
Esteban Leiva,
Yochai Kariv, and Glorioso Noah all had two shots to lead the Chants offense with both of Kimura's shots coming on goal.
CCU was looking for another out-right Sun Belt title with a win, but will look to secure that regular-season title along with the top-seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Championship when they hit the road for the final regular-season match of the season at Georgia Southern on Friday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. ET.
