Game Notes
CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team will be back on the road for this week's Sun Belt action, making stops at Georgia Southern Thursday night and Georgia State Saturday afternoon.
Â
Both Georgia programs are tied for second in the Sun Belt Conference with identical 9-5 conference records heading into the weekend games.
Â
CCU will be looking to hand the Eagles a loss after dropping a hard-fought 70-67 game to Georgia Southern back on Jan. 2 in Conway.
Â
It's a series the Chants have a slim 5-4 lead in, but it's the Eagles that have won three consecutive against CCU, with all three of those wins coming on the Chants' home court. CCU does have a 2-1 record in games played in Statesboro.
Â
The Chants will be facing the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week in Georgia Southern's Quan Jackson. The junior sharpshooter averaged 23.5 points per game last week in leading the Eagles to a pair of road wins over the Louisiana schools.
Â
Ike Smith leads the Eagles in scoring averaging 15 points per game. Jackson averages 12.9 and Isaiah Crawley averages 12.4. Elijah McCadden averages 11.2 points per game.
Â
The Chants
DeVante' Jones and his 16.3 points per game average leads the Chants.
Tommy Burton averages 11.4 points per game and
Tyrell Gumbs-Frater averages 11.1.
Â
Following Thursday's action, the Chants will travel to Atlanta where they will face the Panthers of Georgia State. When the two teams met in Conway back on Jan. 11, the Chants pulled out a 74-72 win that saw CCU hold off a late Panther rally in the game.
Â
The game was tied eight times and had 19 lead changes and CCU's largest lead of the game was at 68-58 with just two minutes left in the game. It was at that time the Chants would miss several free throws and see Georgia State come all the way back and had a chance to win the game on a long three-point attempt that was off the mark.
