CCU Powers Past NIU and Delaware State

CONWAY, S.C. - On Saturday of day two of the Residence Inn Battle at the Beach, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers exploded for 25 runs in 10 innings to pick up two wins over the Northern Illinois Huskies and the Delaware State Hornets.

The Chanticleers used homers in three consecutive innings to jump out to a 9-2 advantage on Northern Illinois.

After a first-inning run by the NIU, the Chanticleers came back to score four of their own as sophomore Taylor Sweigart hit her first career grand slam off Huskie starter Ostrowski to give CCU a 4-1 lead.


In the bottom of the second, senior Kassidy Smith brought home three runs on her first home run of the season to extend her team's lead to 7-2.


Allison Kreyer added to the home run barrage for Coastal in the bottom of the third with her first career home run as she hit a two-run blast run over the centerfield fence, adding to the team's lead by the score of 9-2.


Coastal Carolina would tack on eight more runs, including sophomore Adrienne Visintine coming off the bench to add a pinch-hit two-run double to cap the 15-2 victory.

Raelee Brabham came out of the Chanticleers bullpen to pitch 2.2 innings, allowing no hits, no runs while adding a game-high six strikeouts.


Delaware State

 

Brabham continued her effective pitching in game two of the afternoon as she added her third win of the season.


The freshman from Moncks Corner, S.C., added eight strikeouts on 95 pitches, lowering her earned run average on the season to 0.69.


Grand slams from Stavi Augur and Abbey Montoya were the difference in game two as Coastal picked up their fourth victory of the year.


CCU added a run in the bottom of the first, but the junior Augur broke open the game in the bottom of the second as she came off the bench to hit her second home run of the season on a grand slam to right-centerfield, giving Coastal a 5-1 at the end of two innings of play.


Montoya put the game away in the bottom of the fourth inning as she hit her first home run of the season to cap the 10-0 win.


With the two wins on Saturday Coastal Carolina improves to 4-3 on the season. The Chants return to action on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 1:15 p.m. versus Deleware State and College of Charleston at 3:15 p.m.
