Women’s Basketball Prepares for Final Road Trip in the Peach State

Coastal Carolina is 8-2 in true road games on the season

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team will wrap up the road portion of its 2019-20 schedule this week, as the Chants play a pair of Sun Belt road games in the Peach State. The Chants will go head-to-head with the Georgia Southern Eagles on Feb. 20 in Statesboro, Ga. before going to Atlanta, Ga. to take on the Georgia State Panthers on Feb. 22. The tip-off for both contests are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. ET, respectively.
 
Coastal narrowed the Georgia Southern advantage in the overall series to 5-4 with a 66-59 home win on Jan. 30. CCU followed that with its 10th double-digit victory on the year by defeating the Georgia State 87-45 on Feb. 1 to take a 6-2 series lead in the overall series.
 
ABOUT COASTAL
 
The Chanticleers enter the week with a 21-3 overall record and an 11-2 mark in the Sun Belt to go along with their No. 13 ranking in the College Insider Mid-Major top 25.
 
Coastal has the second-best scoring team in the conference averaging 77.6 points per game while having the top ranked Sun Belt defense allowing just 59.4 points per contest.
 
Senior guard DJ Williams is the top scorer for the Chants averaging 18.9 points per game while sophomore forward Aja Blount is adding 14 points per contest. Senior center Naheria Hamilton leads CCU in rebounding, grabbing almost 10 per game.
 
LAST TIME OUT COASTAL
 
The Chanticleers won their 12th contest at home with a highly contested 76-73 win over South Alabama on Feb. 15. It was also the 21st victory on the season, a mark that CCU has not reached since 1982-83.
 
Williams recorded just the third triple-double in program history with Hamilton recording her ninth double-double of the season to lead the Chants over the Jaguars.
 
Coastal finished shooting 27-of-59 (46 percent) while South Alabama stayed close by making 13 three-point shots. CCU held a slim 46-42 edge in rebounding.
 
SCOUTING GEORGIA SOUTHERN
 
The Eagles enter the contest with an 8-16 overall record and a 5-8 slate in conference play after dropping their last game 72-60 to Louisiana on Feb. 15.
 
Georgia Southern is allowing 66 points per game while scoring just 64.8 points per contest.
 
Tatum Barber and Alexis Brown pace the Eagles offense averaging 11.4 and 11 points per game, respectively. Barber is also the top rebounder averaging 5.5 per contest.
 
LAST TIME OUT GEORGIA SOUTHERN
 
The Ragin' Cajuns used a fast start to push past the Eagles in Lafayette, La. The host team outrebounded Georgia Southern 37-29, pushing the Eagles to 0-9 when the opponent outrebounds them.
 
Barber led the Eagles with 15 points while Hailey Dias-Allen and Sarah Moore recorded 12 points each.
 
SCOUTING GEORGIA STATE
 
Georgia State enters the week with an 8-16 overall record and are 5-8 in the Sun Belt. The Panthers, winners of four consecutive fames, will host Appalachian State prior to hosting Coastal on Feb. 20.
 
The Panthers are averaging 56.6 points per game while allowing 67.1 points per contest.
 
Taylor Hosendove leads three Panthers in double-figure scoring with 11.4 points per game while Jada Lewis and Taylor Henderson are averaging 10.4 and 10 points per contest, respectively.
 
LAST TIME OUT GEORGIA STATE
 
Georgia State held ULM scoreless over the final 6:30 to get a 52-43 road victory over the Warhawks. The Panthers took the lead with two minutes left in the first quarter and never relinquished it over the final 28:41.
 
Hosendove led GSU in scoring with 10 points with eight of the nine Panthers that played scoring or grabbing a rebound.
