Brabham Continues Hot Pitching In Shutout Win Over UMBC

Brabham's scoreless streak runs to 19.2 innings

CONWAY, S.C - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleer softball improved their overall record 9-3 on the season as they took the final game of the Ripley's Chanticleer Showdown against the UMBC Retrievers by the score of 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at St. John Stadium.

For the fourth time this season, Chanticleer pitcher Raelee Brabham picked up a complete game shut out win. The freshman improves to a conference-leading 5-0 on the season and now has run her scoreless streak against to 19.2 innings, dating back to February 15 versus Northern Illinois.

Coastal's offense would pick up the young right-hander and allow her to deal shutout softball throughout the day.

With one out in the bottom of the first inning, junior Makiya Thomas got the Chanticleers on board as she laid down a bunt single, just in front of home plate. The speedy outfielder would score the first Chant run of the game when she darted around the bases from second base on a Courtney Dean double.

In the bottom of the second, Thomas would knock in her only run of the game as she brought home freshman Peyton Rivas from first base with her first career triple in a Chanticleer uniform.

Freshman Mary Sobataka added her first career double with one out in the bottom of the fourth before scoring on sophomore Abbey Montoya's liner into left-center, giving Coastal the 4-0 edge.

The Chants would tack on one more run in the fifth to seal the 4-0 victory.

Brabham cruised through seven innings of scoreless softball by throwing 54 strikes on 82 pitches. As her scoreless streak continues to rise, her earned run average continues to drop. The freshman is among the leaders in the conference of ERA (.34) and wins (5).

The countdown continues for Head Coach Kelley Green and her quest for career-win 700. With the win on Sunday versus UMBC, Green moves to 696 career wins.

Coastal Carolina returns to action on Tuesday as they hit the road for the first time this season with a trip to Presbyterian College. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the PC Softball Complex.
