Coastal Baseball Opens Up Road Slate Wednesday at Charleston

Coastal Carolina baseball will take on the Cougars at 4 p.m. ET
Conway, S.C. – Coastal Carolina baseball will hit the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, Feb. 26, as the Chanticleers will head south to face off with the College of Charleston Cougars at the Baseball Stadium at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m. ET.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
• College of Charleston is 5-1 this season and enters the midweek game having won three-straight contests.
• The Cougars have played all six games thus far this season at home and had their midweek game last week postponed due to weather.
• Charleston was tied with Elon for third in the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Preseason Poll in a vote of the league's nine head coaches.
• The Cougars are coming off back-to-back 36-win seasons and return nine seniors from last year's squad that finished second in the CAA regular-season standings.
ROAD SEASON BEGINS
• Coastal Carolina's 2020 road slate will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Baseball Stadium at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. versus the College of Charleston.
• The Chants' first road contest was originally scheduled for Feb. 18 at UNCW. However, the game was postponed and moved to Springs Brooks Stadium on Feb. 19 due to heavy rain.
• The road contest will be the first of eight-midweek road bouts this season for the Chanticleers which also includes midweek road matchups at NC State (March 4), at Clemson (March 24), at Charlotte (March 31), at UNCW (April 7), at North Carolina (April 14), at Wake Forest (April 21), and at Georgia (April 28).
• Last season, the Chanticleers went 10-12 overall in true road contests and 12-14-1 in games played away from Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C.
ROAD OPENERS
• Wednesday's contest at the College of Charleston will be the road opener for the Chants in 2020.
• Coastal has won each of its last three road openers, all of which have come versus a Colonial Athletic Association foe in UNCW or College of Charleston.
2019: 10-5 win at UNC Wilmington (Feb. 19)

WEATHER CONTINUES TO WRECK HAVOC
• The weather has already wreaked havoc on the Chanticleers' schedule over just the first two weeks of the season.
• Coastal Carolina head coach Gary Gilmore, who is in his 25th season at his alma mater, has missed the last five games due to medical reasons.
• Under acting head coach in associate head coach Kevin Schnall, the Chants have gone 3-2 with wins over UNCW (Feb. 19), Kennesaw State (Feb. 23), and West Virginia (Feb. 23).
• Schnall, a member of the University's Sasser Athletics Hall of Fame where he played under Gilmore in 1998-99, returned to the Chanticleer baseball staff as the associate head coach in July of 2015 and is in his fifth year (2016-present) of his second stint with the Chants and his 17th on staff overall.
• Per NCAA rules, the results to date go to coach Gilmore's record as he is the head coach at Coastal Carolina University.
YEARLY FOES
• Coastal Carolina is 23-25 all-time versus the College of Charleston on the diamond.
• The two teams have met at least once every year since 2001 after not playing in 2000 due to a rainout.
• While Charleston has won each of the last three matchups between the two teams, including both meetings last year, Coastal Carolina and Charleston have split the last 10 meetings right down the middle at 5-5.
• Both teams have almost identical records in the series at their home fields.
Coastal is 16-8 at home versus the Cougars, while Charleston is 17-7 at home versus the Chants.
WINNING WAYS
• Coastal Carolina enters the midweek contest on a two-game winning streak having defeated Kennesaw State (13-5) and West Virginia (14-2) in a non-traditional doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 23.
• Charleston has won three-straight games, all of which have come at home, after sweeping Youngstown State in a three-game weekend series last weekend.
EXTRA SIDE NOTE
• College of Charleston's lone loss of the season to date came by way of a 4-2 defeat to the Maryland Terrapins on Feb. 16.
• Coastal Carolina will host Maryland for a three-game weekend series this weekend, Feb. 28 through March 1, at Springs Brooks Stadium.

• The Chanticleers will return home for a three-game weekend series versus the Maryland Terrapins, Feb. 28 through March 1.
