Chants, Terrapins to Face Off in Three-Game Series This Weekend

Coastal Carolina baseball will host Maryland for three games at Springs Brooks Stadium

Conway, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers will face off with the Maryland Terrapins in a non-conference three-game series this weekend at Springs Brooks Stadium. First pitch for Friday, Feb. 28, is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET. Saturday afternoon's contest is slated for a 2 p.m. ET start, while Sunday's series finale will begin at 1 p.m. ET.
 
ABOUT THE CHANTS
• Coastal Carolina is 4-3 this season with all seven games coming at home in Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C.
• The Chanticleers' midweek game at College of Charleston on Wednesday was canceled due to rain and inclement weather.
• The Chanticleers are coming off a doubleheader sweep of Kennesaw State and West Virginia last Sunday in which the offense exploded with 27 runs on 28 base hits combined in the two home wins.
 
ABOUT MARYLAND
• Maryland enters play this weekend at 6-1 on the season, its best start since 2015.
• The Terrapins have won two-straight heading into the weekend and are coming off a 13-3 home win over George Mason on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
• Maryland opened the season at 4-0, which included three-straight wins in the state of South Carolina at the College of Charleston.
• The Terrapins are 2-0 versus teams from the Palmetto State this season with wins over Charleston Southern (11-2) and College of Charleston (4-2, 10 innings).
 
ALL-TIME SERIES HISTORY
• Coastal Carolina is 9-4 all-time versus Maryland on the baseball diamond.
• This year's matchups will mark the third-straight season that the Chants and Terrapins have faced off with the two teams splitting the last two meetings - Coastal won 7-2 in 2019 and Maryland won 7-6 in 2018.
• The Chanticleers have won three of the last four meetings over the Terrapins and are 3-1 versus Maryland under head coach Gary Gilmore.
 
WINNING WAYS
• Coastal Carolina enters the weekend series on a two-game winning streak having defeated Kennesaw State (13-5) and West Virginia (14-2) in a non-traditional doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 23.
• Maryland has also won two-straight heading into the weekend and are coming off a 13-3 home win over George Mason on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
 
ALL ABOUT THE PITCHING
• Coastal Carolina's pitching staff has not allowed more than five runs in a single game this season. In fact, the Chanticleers have not allowed more than four earned runs in a single game this year.
• Maryland has allowed more than three runs in a game just once this season, 11 runs in a loss to Rhode Island on Feb. 22.
 
SERIES PLAY
• For the first time this season, the Chanticleers will be playing a team more than once over the weekend with the three-game series versus the Maryland Terrapins.
• The Chants' first two weekends this year consisted of home tournaments and saw them play six different teams in UNCG and San Diego State at the Brittain Resorts Baseball at the Beach on Feb. 14-15 and Saint Joseph's, Ilinois, Kennesaw State, and West Virginia last weekend at the Brittain Resorts Invitational.
• The weekend series versus the Terrapins this week is one of only two non-conference three-game series on the Chants' 2020 schedule, the other being on March 6-8 versus Middle Tennessee State.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
• With this weekend's series versus Maryland taking place at Springs Brooks Stadium, the Chanticleers will have played the entire month of February at home.
• The Chants' originally scheduled two road games - at UNCW on Feb. 18 and at College of Charleston on Feb. 26 - were impacted by the weather and moved to Springs Brooks Stadium or postponed to a later date.
• With the schedule changes, CCU's first road game will be at NC State (March 4).
 
BIG TEN
• The Chanticleers are 0-1 versus the Big Ten this season having suffered a 5-2 loss last weekend to the Illinois Fighting Illini at the Brittain Resorts Invitational.
• Since Maryland moved to the Big Ten in 2014, the Chanticleers have gone 12-13 versus the league foes, including going 5-2 last season with wins over Maryland, Michigan State, Illinois, and Indiana.
 
WEATHER CONTINUES TO WRECK HAVOC
• The weather has already wreaked havoc on the Chanticleers' schedule over just the first two weeks of the season.
   Sunday, Feb. 16 versus Virginia Tech (canceled)
   Tuesday, Feb. 18 at UNCW (postponed) until Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Coastal Carolina
   Monday, Feb. 24 versus West Virginia moved up to Sunday, Feb. 23
   Wednesday, Feb. 26 at College of Charleston (canceled)
 
ON THE HORIZON
• Coastal will play two midweek games next week, hosting Charlotte on Tuesday, March 3, before heading to Raleigh, N.C. to do battle with nationally-ranked NC State on Wednesday, March 4.
