CCU Splits With Ohio and UMES on Saturday

CCU has 10-game win streak snapped on Day 2 of Courtyard Marriott Barefoot Landing Invitational

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team (12-4) split a pair of games to Ohio University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday part of the Courtyard Marriott Barefoot Landing Invitational.

Ohio

The Chanticleers' 10-game winning was snapped with a 13-5 loss to the Bobcats.

In the bottom of the first, with CCU down by the score of 1-0, junior Stavi Augur walked with the bases loaded, giving CCU its first run of the game. Freshman Iyanla DeJesus got her first career hit with a two-RBI single, bringing home junior Courtney Dean and Augur. Senior Kassidy Smith gave the Chanticleers a 4-2 lead with a double off the left-field fence, finishing off the home half of the second inning.

The Bobcats knocked out starter Chanticleer Raelee Brabham in the top of the second inning as they picked up six runs off the freshman. Molly Troutman, Caitlin Fogue, and Ava Heidorn all knocked in two runs apeice in the second inning to give the Bobcats an 8-4 lead.

Mackenzie Beyer added her third home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning to cut into the Ohio lead, but that was the closest CCU would get in the five-inning loss.

Ohio tacked on five runs in the third to cap off the 13-5 victory.

Brabham took the loss for the first time this season, falling to 6-1. The righty gave up a season-high five earned runs in 1.1 innings of work, her shortest outing of the season.

Beyer led the Chants with a 2-for-2 game. DeJesus led the team with two runs batted in to go along with her first-inning hit.

UMES

It was all Coastal Carolina in game two as seven of the eight Coastal runs came on extra-base hits.

Extra base hits by Stavi Augur, Mackenzie Beyer, Sydney Guess, and Paige Rivas all-led to the five-run fourth inning.

Abbey Montoya led off with a single and then came around to score on the double down the right-field line by Stavi Augur. After a Kassidy Smith walk, Guess doubled into left-centerfield, scoring Augur and Smith, extending the lead to 3-0. Guess would move to third on the RBI ground out by Adrienne Visintine and then score on Paige Rivas' first career triple.

Homers in the bottom of the sixth inning by Ally Clegg and a two-run home run by Montoya gave Coastal the 8-0 victory. It was Clegg's first in a Chanticleer uniform and Montoya's fourth of the season.

Ally Marcano got the first start of her career and went the distance. The senior worked a career-high four innings, allowing no runs on one hit.

The Coastal crowd got to see Iyanla DeJesus for the first time in pitching the circle, and the Mill Creek, Wash., native did not disappoint. DeJesus worked the final two innings, allowing a hit with three strikeouts.

The Chant softball team will return to the diamond on Sunday, March 1 as they take on on the USC Upstate Spartans at 1:45 p.m.
