CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers split a pair of games on Saturday with the East Carolina Pirates and the Iowa Hawkeyes and end the second day of the Residence Inn Kickin' Chicken Classic with a season overall record of 1-2.
East Carolina
In the second game versus ECU, the Chants picked up the 8-1 win as they collected 15 hits. Led by junior
Stavi Augur's 3-for-5, five RBI day, the team would pound out the most hits in a game since April 2, 2013, at Charleston Southern when they collected 16.
East Carolina started the scoring in the top of the first as Olivia Narron singled off CCU starter
Raelee Brabham and then came around to score on a throwing error by Chant catcher
Mackenzie Beyer.
Coastal Carolina took a 3-1 lead in the home half of the first inning as leadoff hitter
Peyton Rivas and
Taylor Sweigart recorded back-to-back singles before Augur added her first home run of the season with a three-run shot to left field.
In the bottom of the second, the junior outfielder singled, adding her fourth RBI of the game, scoring Rivas.
CCU added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend to a 5-1 lead with the help of sophomore
Mackenzie Beyer's first home run of the season and Augur adding her fifth run batted in of the day, singling in
Paige Rivas.
Raelee Brabham sealed her first career win as she threw her first complete game, allowing five hits and no earned runs.
Chant freshman
Paige Rivas and
Mary Sobataka picked up their first career-hits in the win.
Iowa
A pitching duel took place between Chant junior
Kaitlin Beasley-Polko and Iowa senior Allison Doocey.
Beasley-Polko held the Hawkeyes scoreless through 3.1 innings before allowing an RBI groundout in the top of the fourth to Riley Sheehy, to make it 1-0 Hawkeyes.
Doocey, through the first 4.2 innings of the game, allowed no hits with eight strikeouts. The Hawkeye ace had a string of four consecutive punchouts and 6-of-8. Augur singled off Doocey in the bottom of the fourth to break up the no-hit bid.
Ally Clegg tied the score at 1-1 with her first career run batted in, scoring Augur from second base with a single into left field.
Both team aces held their opponent scoreless through the final four innings of regulation play to send the game into extra innings.
With the score tied in the top of the eighth and Iowa's Nia Carter on third base as the go-ahead run, Beasley-Polko induced a ground ball to second baseman Sweigart, but the junior was unable to play the ball cleanly, allowing Hawkeyes to take the 2-1 lead.
CCU was unable to tie it in the bottom half of the eighth as they had runners on second and third with nobody out. With no outs, Doocey threw an errant pitch to the backstop, and Chant runner
Adrienne Visintine was tagged out trying to score from third base. The Hawkeye starter sealed the win for her team as she retired the final two Chanticleers, Sweigart and
Courtney Dean.
Both pitchers went the distance, going eight innings. Doocey picked up her first win of the season allowing four hits and one run. Beasley-Polko drops to 0-2 on the season, allowing eight hits and one earned run in the loss.
CCU will be back on the field on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. as they take on the Campbell Camels at St. John Stadium on day three of the Residence Inn Kickin' Chicken Classic.
