Chants’ Zack Taylor Leads Field at General Hackler Championship

Coastal Carolina men’s golf senior is in first-place at -10 under par
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.– Coastal Carolina senior Zack Taylor posted rounds of 66 and 68 to put himself atop of the individual player leaderboard after 36-holes of play at the 19th annual General Hackler Championship on Monday at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The second-year Chant carded a tournament-low round 66, -6 under par, in the morning round and then followed that up with a second-round 68, -4 under par, to end the day in first-place overall with a 36-hole score of 134, -10 under par. Taylor finished the day with two eagles and 10 birdies to go along with 20 pars over his 36-holes of play.
The round of 66 is tied for his second-lowest 18-hole score in his career as a Chant, while his two-round score of 134 is tied for the fourth-lowest 36-hole score in a 54-hole event in Coastal men's golf history.
The Chant is four strokes ahead of a trio of players in Eric Bae (Wake Forest), No. 11 Jonathan Brightwell (UNCG), and Benjamin Shipp (NC State) who are all tied at 138, -6 under par.
As a team, the Chanticleers posted rounds of 291 and 293 to end day one of play in 10th-place overall with a two-round team score of 584, +8.
No. 26 North Carolina leads the 15-team field with a 36-hole score of 564, -12 under par.
No. 7 Wake Forest (569, -7), No. 35 Liberty (571, -5), No. 25 ETSU (575, -1), and NC State (575, -1) round out the top five.
Behind Zack Taylor in the CCU lineup is States Fort in a tie for 33rd overall with his 36-hole score of 146, +2. The fourth-year Chant posted a first-round 72, even par, and shot a second-round 74, +2, on Monday. The Georgia native totaled seven birdies and 22 pars on the day.
Sophomore Tyler Gray sits in a log jam at 48th-place with a two-round score of 149, +5, while classmate Connor Newton is 11 strokes over par at 155. Gray carded rounds of 77 and 72, which included seven birdies and 21 pars overall. Newton turned in three birdies and 22 pars over his two rounds of play and is in a tie for 74th overall.
Coastal's other member of the lineup, Gavin Noble, was forced to withdraw early in the second round of play. The freshman hopes to return to the links for competition tomorrow for the third and final round of play.
Playing as individuals, sophomore Brady Hinkle is in a tie for 11th-place overall with his rounds of 70 and 72, and 36-hole score of 142, -2 under par, while fellow Chant Seth Taylor recorded back-to-back rounds of 74, +2, to end day one in a tie for 44th overall with a 36-hole score of 148, +4.
The third and final round of play will begin tomorrow at 7:40 a.m. ET.
