Volleyball Adds Three More Signees for 2020

Chanticleers will have seven newcomers take the court this season

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina head volleyball coach Jozsef Forman is excited to announce the addition of three more student-athletes in Taylor Baldwin (Holland, Ohio/Springfield HS), Marija Borcic (Uzice, Serbia/Gymnasium Uzice/University of Illinois-Chicago), and Blaire Fleming (Aldie, Va./John Champe HS) to the 2020 signing class.

The trio joins the quartet of Madison Lowery (Paradise, Texas/Decatur HS), Nyla Shepherd (Woodstock, Ga./Woodstock HS), Taylor Thomason (Wake Forest, N.C./North Raleigh Christian Academy), and Lauren Malone (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock HS) who all agreed to continue their academic and athletic careers at Coastal Carolina in November 2019. (Full Release)

Taylor Baldwin – 5-10 * Outside Hitter * Holland, Ohio/Springfield HS

Baldwin joins the Coastal Carolina program following an outstanding high school career at Springfield High School in Holland, Ohio. A four-year letterwinner while playing as a middle and outside hitter, Baldwin was twice named first-team all-league and first-team all-district. She was named the conference player of the year in 2018 as a junior and went on to earn third-team All-Ohio honors in 2019 as a senior. A participant in the 2019 Ohio All-Star match, Baldwin capped her high school career by becoming the school's first-ever volleyball player to record 1,000-career kills. She also set the school record for most kills in a match with 29, breaking her previous school record of 28, and most career kills with over 1,000.

A member of the Premier Volleyball club team, she was a member of the honor roll every trimester of her high school career and graduated with honors. Baldwin also served as an ambassador for her class.

"When Taylor committed to Coastal she committed to our level and she wants to improve and reach her maximum potential," commented coach Forman. "Not only because of her jumping ability and power, but her commitment and resilient work ethic makes her very talented. She will be a great addition to our program both on and off the court."

Marija Borcic - 5-10 * Setter * Uzice, Serbia/Gymnasium Uzice (UIC)

Borcic comes to Coastal Carolina after playing two seasons at UIC where she played in 220 sets and started 60 matches at the setter position. She dished out a total of 1,662 set assists over her two seasons, which included a team-high 999 as a freshman in 2018, and totaled 65 service aces, 559 digs, 54 kills, and 35 total blocks.

In 2019, Borcic led the Flames with 29 service aces and was fourth on the team with 229 digs. She also handed out 663 assists for an average of 6.50 per set to rank sixth in the Horizon League. As a freshman in 2018, the Uzice, Serbia native was second on the team with 36 aces, which also ranked third in the Horizon League, and in digs with 335 digs, while also leading the team with 16 double-doubles on the year.

In 2015-16, Borcic was a member of the first-place winning Jedinstvo Uzice of the Zlatiborsko-Moravicki district in the junior and cadet categories in her home country of Hungary. From 2013-14, the 5-10 setter was a member of Ok Forma and helped lead her team to a first-place finish in the Zlatiborsko-Moravicki district in the cadet category. In 2015, she was tabbed the best setter and most valuable player in the cadet category, while in 2013 she was named the best setter in the district of the pioneer category.

"Marija is a very experienced setter with high-level setting and organization skills. She can make quick decisions to adjust to different situations in and out of system," continued Forman. "She understands the top-level offensive system, and her jump set with high contact makes her unpredictable, which as a setter is perfect. She is a calm, mature, and confident player. She will make an immediate impact on our team."

Blaire Fleming – 6-1 * Outside Hitter/Right Side * Aldie, Va./John Champe HS

Fleming heads to Coastal Carolina after a stellar career at John Champe High School where she was named to the first-team All-Cedar Run District team her senior season when she hit .266 on the year. In 2019, she helped lead her team to the most wins in school history at 19, finish as the district runner-up, and earn a region berth. In addition, she set two school records with kills in a match at 30 and kills in a season at 266, and earned team MVP honors. She also played club volleyball for the Virginia Juniors.

"Blaire has a strong sense for the game and she has a naturally-high volleyball IQ. Having outstanding jumping ability and power makes her a very dynamic outside hitter," Forman stated. "She is eager to play at a high level and prove herself on and off the court. I believe she is a true winner and ready to take the next step to her career at Coastal."
