Coastal Carolina will play on Tuesday and Wednesday
CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team will tee-off its 2020 fall season this week at the Graeme McDowell Invitational on Sept. 29-30 at the Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.
Hosted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), the two-day event will take place on the par 72, 7,299 yards Greystone Founders Course. It will consist of 36 holes of play on Tuesday followed by a final 18 holes on Wednesday.
This year's tournament field will include host UAB, Augusta, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Louisiana, Middle Tennessee, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Troy, and ULM.
Each team will have six players compete with the lowest four scores each round counting towards that round's team score.
"We are excited to open our season in Birmingham," said head coach Jim Garren smiling. "Greystone is a great golf course and will be a good challenge. UAB already has two team wins this season so it will be nice to go up against them and see where we stand."
Coach Garren will send out an experienced lineup for the fall opener in Zack Taylor, Connor Newton, Tyler Gray, Brady Hinkle, Seth Taylor, and Gavin Noble.
A two-time GCAA/Ping Division I All-Region selection, Zach Taylor will look to start his final year at CCU off on a high note. Last season, he led the team with a 70.79 stroke average over 19 rounds of play, which included seven rounds in the 60's and 13 total rounds of par or better.
In their third year as Chants, both Newton and Gray will look to become consistent scorers in 2020-21.
Last year, Newton played in four events, posting a season stroke average of 76.08 over 12 rounds of play, highlighted by a low-round 70 at the 2019 Badger Invitational.
Gray, who is coming off a strong summer season, also played in four tournaments a year ago, turning in a season stroke average of 74.50 over 10 rounds of play. He had one top-10 finish, as he placed ninth overall at the Florida Gators Invitational with season-low rounds of 68, 71, and 71 for a 54-hole score of 210, even par.
Hinkle played in five tournaments last season for the Chants, as he finished the abbreviated season fourth on the team with a 73.31 stroke average. The junior golfer carded seven rounds of par or better last season over 13 rounds of play and recorded a low-round 70 twice.
Sophomores Seth Taylor and Noble will tee-off in the fifth and sixth spots of the lineup, respectively, as both will look to improve on strong freshman campaigns last season that saw the pair in the lineup in almost every event.
Seth Taylor played in all seven events as a freshman last year for CCU and was third on the team with a 73.05 stroke average over 19 rounds of play. He carded three rounds in the 60's and a total of eight rounds of par or better on the year while also matching Zack Taylor (no relation) for the lowest round of any Chant last season at 66, -6 under par.
Noble, who was forced to withdrawal out of the last tournament in the spring season due to a back injury, is healthy and will look to continue to build on a freshman year that saw him record a 74.36 stroke average over 14 rounds of play. He turned in a low-round 69 on the season and had a tournament-low 54-hole score of 216, even par, at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
