Women’s Tennis to Open Play this Weekend at Clemson and USC

Chanticleers will play back-to-back road matches versus the two in-state foes

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team will open up the 2021 spring season with back-to-back road matches versus in-state foes Clemson and South Carolina this weekend, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 15 and 16.

The Chanticleers will face off with the Clemson Tigers on Friday, Jan. 15, at 4 p.m. ET in Clemson, S.C. for their first match of the 2021 season before traveling to Columbia, S.C. to do battle with the Gamecocks on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 3 p.m. ET.

Last season, the Chants were 6-3 overall and were riding a four-match winning streak when the season was abruptly canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Looking to pick up where they left off a year ago, head coach Catherine Hewitt's squad returns a handful of experienced players in Somer Dalla-Bona, Jessie Mount, and Iryna Vardanian, while sophomore Valentina Urelli returns after a strong start to her CCU career as a freshman in 2019-20.

The Chants have added even more experience this season with the addition of transfers Kristyna Jurkova and Victoire De Samucewicz and welcome three new highly-touted freshmen to the lineup in Jesse Hollins, Mathilde Tranberg, and Isabella Weatherhead.

The Chanticleers have faced off with Clemson (0-1) just once on the hard courts with the Tigers taking a 4-0 win over CCU back in 2007. Coastal is 0-5 all-time versus the Gamecocks including a 6-1 loss in Columbia last season.
