Coastal Carolina will compete at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort
CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina men's golf will tee-off its 2021 spring season at the Any Given Tuesday (AGT) Intercollegiate this week, Jan. 24-26, at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort in Kiawah Island, S.C.
A late add to the spring tournament schedule, the AGT Intercollegiate will consist of 54-holes, 18 holes each day, and will consist of teams around the southeast region in Jacksonville State, FGCU, Lipscomb, Kennesaw State, Morehead State, High Point, Winthrop, USC Upstate, Charleston Southern, and the Chanticleers.
"We are elated to get back going with competition this week. There were several positives from the fall that will hopefully help us as we move into the rest of the season. We were in contention to win two out of the three events, and although we didn't get it done, we have made some adjustments that will help us going forward. Tyler (Gray) winning individually was big for him and us as well," stated head coach Jim Garren.
The Chanticleers will again send out an experienced lineup this week in Zack Taylor, States Fort, Connor Newton, Tyler Gray, Brady Hinkle, and Seth Taylor.
The six Chants will play together again this week in two threesomes per COVID-19 guidelines and all six will count towards the team score each round.
"We have an older and experienced group going this week, a lot of guys who have had success at this level and that experience will hopefully pay off. It's also nice to have States (Fort) back after sitting out the fall season. Any time you can add a top-15 scorer in program history back to your lineup that's a good thing. We've seen some good play here at home the first two weeks of practice so now we just have to go get it rolling in competition," continued Garren.
A two-time Ping! All-Region selection, Zack Taylor paced the Chants over the 2020 fall season, carding a stroke average of 73.63 over the three tournaments. He posted one top-five finish and totaled three rounds of par or better for the fall slate.
Returning to the lineup after sitting out the fall season, Fort is the most experienced golfer on the CCU roster this year. The fifth-year senior has played in 33 events over his four years at Coastal, posting a 74.01 career stroke average with 32 rounds of par or better including 11 rounds in the 60s.
Breaking into the lineup on a consistent basis this fall was the trio of juniors in Newton, Gray, and Hinkle.
Newton recorded a fall stroke average of 75.88 over the three events, turning in a low-round 70 in the season opener Graeme McDowell Invitational in September.
Gray posted a first-place finish at the Intercollegiate at the Grove with a rounds of 68 and 72 for a low score of 140, 4-under par in the win. He closed out the fall with a stroke average of 74.38, which was second on the team for the three events.
Hinkle played in two of the three tournaments over the fall season, turning in a stroke average of 75.00 over five rounds of play, which included a low-round of 72, even par at the Graeme McDowell Invitational.
Rounding out the lineup is sophomore Seth Taylor. Last season, he carded a season stroke average of 73.05 over seven events and posted a top-10 individual finish. This fall, he competed in all three events for the Chants, shooting a low-round 71 and recording a stroke average of 76.88 over his eight rounds of play.
All three days of play will begin with a 9 a.m. ET start off of holes No. 1 and 10.
