Chanticleeers to Host Trojans and Jaguars at HTC Center this Weekend

The Chanticleers have won the last 15 matches combined between the two SBC Alabama schools

CONWAY, S.C. – The Chanticleer women's volleyball team looks to improve on their 4-0 start to the 2021 Sun Belt Conference season and 10-4 overall mark as they host Troy and South Alabama this weekend at the HTC Center.

Face coverings WILL BE required for admission to all indoor Coastal Carolina home athletic events for 2021-22. Coastal Carolina and the Department of Athletics are committed to providing a safe environment for the enjoyment of our patrons that attend our home intercollegiate athletic events. Individuals that disregard health and safety protocols may be asked to leave.
 
The Chanticleers will take on the Troy Trojans on Friday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. ET. The first 100 students will receive a slice of Rotelli's pizza. On Sunday, Oct 10., CCU will face-off with the South Alabama Jaguars at noon ET. Both matches will be shown on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
  • The Chanticleers went 2-0 last weekend in Georgia with victories over Georgia Southern, 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-15, 25-18), and Georgia State, 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 24-26, 15-8). Graduate transfer Doris Carter had a pair of double-doubles in the two wins. Carter would tally 16 kills and 10 digs in the win versus the Eagles and the next night, she followed it up with a 10-kill, 13-dig effort in the five-set win of the Panthers. Fellow graduate transfer Cheyenne Jones aided in the two wins with 10 kills vesus GASO and a season-high 12 kills versus GSU. 
CCU DOUBLE-DOUBLES
  • Doris Carter and Brigitta Petrenko combined for three double-doubles in the wins over the Georgia Southern and Georgia State. Carter notched her third double-double in four matches with 16 kills and 10 digs in the four-set win of Georgia Southern and 10 kills and 13 digs versus Georgia State to remain undefeated in conference play.  Petrenko added her 13th-career double-double with a 36-assist, 12-dig performance versus the Panthers. 
CARTER IS TOP 10
  • Outside hitter Doris Carter is ranked in the top 10 of a pair of Sun Belt offensive categories in her first year with the Chants. The Lexington, Ky. native comes into the weekend fifth in the conference with 3.24 kills per sets and seventh with 3.56 points per set. 
CCU DIGS PERUGINI
  • Junior Lina Perugini ranks third in the conference with 5.02 digs per set. Perugini has tallied seven 20-dig performances thus far on the season. The Bethlehem, Pa. native has put together three-straight matches of 20 digs or more. Over the past three matches, Perugini has averaged 22 digs per match, including 23 in the win over A-State on Sept. 26, 20 in the win over GASO (Oct. 1) and 23 in the win over GSU (Oct. 2).
PERUGINI SURPASSES 1000-DIGS
  • Libero Lina Perugini picked up her 1,000th career dig last weekend in the five-set victory of Georgia State where she had a match-high 23 digs.
1000-KILL WATCH
  • Super Senior Ani Bozdeva has spent three of her four seasons playing for the Chanticleers, where she has amassed 970 putaways. The Razlog, Bulgaria native is 30 kills away from reaching the 1000-kill milestone. Last weekend in Georgia, Bozdeva totaled 22 kills in the two wins versus Georgia Southern and Georgia State.
  • Cheyenne Jones, the Missoula, Mont. native, transferred in from UTEP this season. So far in her career, the outside hitter has collected 868 career kills. Jones had back-to-back double-digit kill matches versus last weekend versus Georgia Southern (10) and a season-high 12 versus Georgia State.
  • Earlier this season, Doris Carter reached that prestigious career-mark versus Arkansas State.
 
PETRENKO CONTINUES TO MOVE UP IN THE RECORD BOOK
  • Setter Brigitta Petrenko passed Sam Skyrd ('14) and Nevada Blondstien ('00) last weekend for sixth all-time on the assists list. Petrenko is currently sitting with 2098 for her career.
ACES REIGN
  • Brigitta Petrenko ranks first amongst servers in the SBC as she averages .51 aces per set. The Hungary native is also first in the SBC with 26 aces so far this season.
CCU IS PERFECT
  • Since 2019, the Chanticleers own a perfect record in regular season conference matches (19-0). The last time CCU lost in the conference regular season occurred on Nov. 2, 2019 at Troy.
TENTH TIME FOR BOZDEVA
  • Super senior Ani Bozdeva collected her ninth and 10th double-digit kill matches of the season last weekend in victories over Georgia Southern (12) and Georgia State (10). Bozdeva has accomplished that feat in five-straight matches, averaging 13.4 kills per match. 
WEEKEND BLOCK PARTY
  • Middle blocker Madison Lowery had a season-high nine blocks in the five-set victory of Georgia State. This marks her personal best for her career. 
SERIES HISTORY – TROY
  • The Chanticleers have a 9-6 record all-time record versus the Trojans and have won the last four matches.
  • Two teams played three times in 2020 with CCU each match. In the first of two matches on Oct. 22, Anett Nemeth led the Chanticleers with a match-high 18 kills in the straight-sets win. In match two of the day, Jelena Prolic had a career-high 13 kills, while Ani Bozdeva had a season-high 18 kills in the five-set win. The Chants and Trojans closed out the series the next day on Oct. 23. It saw the Chants remained undefeated in conference play behind Nemeth's 13-kill, seven dig performance. 
SERIES HISTORY – SOUTH ALABAMA
  • The Chanticleers have won 11 of the 12 matches played between the two schools, including all three in 2020. The two teams played an even opening match in the series as it saw no CCU player reach the double-digit kills mark. Anett Nemeth led the Chants with eight kills in a 3-0 sweep of the Jaguars on Oct. 20. CCU came back later that night to defeat USA once again by the score of 3-0. Again, it was Nemeth leading the Chants with a match-high 12 kills. The Chants and Ani Bozdeva closed out the Jags in the match three of the weekend series on Oct. 16 with a 3-1 win. Bozdeva led CCU with a match-high 11 kills while libero Lina Perugini added a match-high 23 digs. 
A GLIMPSE AT TROY
  • The Trojans enter into this weekend with a 9-6 overall record and 2-2 in Sun Belt play.
  • The Trojans went 1-1 last weekend in Arkansas with a 3-1 win over Little Rock. Troy had three players with double-digit kills in the match led by Julia Brooks (16), followed by Cheyenne Hayes (12), and Ashley Guenyear (10). The Trojans fell to Arkansas State in five sets. Julia Brooks tied her season-high with 18 kills, followed by Cheyenne Hayes' 17 putaways.
  • Hayes is the all-leader in kills (1,539) at Troy and became the first player in school history with 1,000 kill and 1,000 digs. 
A GLIMPSE AT SOUTH ALABAMA
  • USA has an 11-5 overall record this season and along with the Chanticleers, the Jaguars are the only other team to have an unblemished conference record of 4-0.
  • The Jags knocked off the Arkansas State Red Wolves in four sets on Friday night, marking their third-ever win in Jonesboro, Ark. Hannah Maddux finished with a season-high 18 kills and .333 hitting percentage, and Kailey Keeble recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 46 assists and 18 digs.  The following night at Little Rock, Carissa Bradford tied her career-high with 18 kills, and posted a .359 hitting percentage to lead the Jags to a sweep of the Trojans. Kailey Keeble recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 44 assists and 13 digs, and Maddie Soboleski recorded her fifth double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs.
  • On Tuesday, Keeble was named to the SBC Setter of the Week for the second-straight week. Last weekend, she averaged 12.86 assists per set with 90 assists in seven sets played while helping the Jags remain perfect in league play.
