Five Chants Earn CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

Coastal Carolina had five players named to the District 4 team
CONWAY, S.C. – A total of five Coastal Carolina football student-athletes in Steven Bedosky, Trey Carter, Silas Kelly, Charles Ouverson, and Alex Spillum were all named to the 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District first team in football. All five Chants were named to the NCAA Division I District 4 first team which includes student-athletes from the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, as well as Puerto Rico.
All five have received the honor multiple times now for their CCU careers.
The 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District football team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA All-America program separately recognizes football honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA.
To be eligible, a student-athlete has to have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and have played in over 50 percent of the team's games on the season.
Bedosky, who was a 2018 and 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, picks up the honor for the third time in his career. The veteran offensive lineman graduated with his MBA in December 2020 and is working towards his second master's degree in instructional technology. A 2020 All-Sun Belt honorable mention selection, Bedosky was named to the 2020 Phil Steele Sun Belt All-Conference fourth team as well, as he started and played in all 10 games to date for the Chanticleers this season.
A key member of the offensive line unit that was named a Joe Moore Award semifinalist in 2020, presented annually to the nation's top offensive line unit, the Georgia native has played in 46 games over his CCU career, starting 41 contests on the offensive line heading into Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 20, versus Texas State.
Fellow offensive lineman Carter is picking up his second CoSIDA Academic All-District first-team honor, having received the recognition back in 2019. A four-time All-Sun Belt performer, picking up first-team honors in 2020, third-team accolades in 2019, and honorable mention in both 2017 and 2018, Carter is working towards his master's degree in instructional technology after graduating in August 2019 with his bachelor's degree in exercise and sport science.
A member of the 2019 Rimington Trophy and 2021 Outland Trophy watch lists, Carter has played in and started a total of 58-straight games dating back to the start of the 2017 season, after redshirting in 2016. He, along with Bedosky, has helped to anchor an offensive line that has made way for the CCU offense to rank in the top-10 in all of FBS in team passing efficiency (1st), fourth-down conversion percentage (1st), third-down conversion percentage (2nd), completion percentage (5th), passing yards per completion (6th), total offense (8th), and rushing offense (8th).
Named a 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-America last year, Kelly graduated with a degree in both exercise and sport science and business management in December 2020 and is working towards his MBA. Named one of three national 2020 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award winners last season, Kelly is now a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.
This season, Kelly again leads the team with 77 total stops, including 6.5 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks. Last time out versus Georgia State (Nov. 13), he made history as he eclipsed the 300-career tackles mark to become just the third Chanticleer in program history to record 300 career tackles.
A 2020 All-Sun Belt second-team selection and two-time All-Sun Belt honorable mention honoree, the two-time team captain has played in 46 games during his time at CCU, starting 43 contests. He ranks third all-time in CCU program history in total tackles (307), third in assisted tackles (154), fourth in solo tackles (153), and 10th in tackles-for-loss (22.5).
A 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District first-team selection, Ouverson is already a two-time graduate of Coastal earning his bachelor's degree in finance in May 2019 and his MBA in December 2020. A three-time Ray Guy Award watch list member, the super senior punter has played in 55 games over his CCU career, also serving as the team's field goal and extra-point holder.
This season in 2021, Ouverson has punted 31 times for 1,167 yards, an average of 37.6 yards per kick. He has also put 10 punts inside the 20-yard line and had 13 punts fair caught.
For his career, the local product ranks first in CCU history in average yards per punt at 40.75 and is fifth all-time in punt yards with 4,605 for his career.
A three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, earning the honor in both 2019 and 2020-21, Spillum earns the academic honor for the third-straight season. The fifth-year Chant earned his degree in business management in December 2020 and is working towards a second bachelor's degree in communication.
Chosen to both the 2020 Phil Steele SBC All-Conference and 2020 All-Sun Belt third teams last year, Spillum has played in and started all 10 games for the Chanticleers this season. He has totaled 44 tackles, 0.5 tackles-for-loss, four pass breakups, and is tied among the nation's leaders in blocked kicks with two.
Named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week on Nov. 8 after blocking a punt that was returned for a touchdown in the win over Georgia Southern (Nov. 6), Spillum also blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown in the home win over Kansas (Sept. 10).
For his career at CCU, Spillum has recorded 164 total tackles, 4.5 tackles-for-loss, 1.0 sack, five interceptions, defended 14 passes, forced one fumble, recovered two fumbles, and blocked two kicks.
The five Chants mark the fourth consecutive season that Coastal Carolina has had at least five student-athletes named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 first team.
