Luke Nelson fires a 69 in the opening round
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team shot a one-over 285 to open play at the Saint Mary's Invitational Monday afternoon at the Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach, Calif., placing them in a tie for 10th after the first round.
Â
Sophomore Luke Nelson shot a career-best two-under 69 in leading the Chants on the opening day of action. He had a team-best five birdies on the day, with three on the front nine, including back-to-back birdies on holes three and four. He added two more birdies on the back nine. He was tied for 12th after the round.
Â
Seth Taylor had another consistent round finishing with an even-par 71. He ended the opening nine holes with a birdie on hole No. 10 and shot a one-over 36 on the back nine to end the day tied for 33rd.
Â
Only one shot behind Taylor is teammate Gavin Noble. The junior opened the day with an even-par 36 on the first nine holes and only a bogey-bogey finish kept him from finishing under par. His one-over 72 has him tied for 41st.
Â
Trey Crenshaw didn't start the day the way he had hoped with three bogeys on the first six holes. From there the freshman birdied two of the next three holes and went two-under over the next 12 holes before a bogey on the final hole filled out his score card with a two-over 73. He is tied for 54th heading into the second round.
Â
Junior Viktor Olund shot an eight-over 79 in the opening round and is tied for 102nd with teammate Holden Grigg who is playing as an individual.
Â
With the event being held on the West Coast, it is no wonder seven of the top nine teams in the event are from the west. Stanford, the sixth-ranked team in the nation leads the event after shooting a 15-under 269. San Francisco is second after the opening round after scoring a seven-under 277. Santa Clara and Oregon are tied for third at four-under 280. San Diego is fifth after the round with a two-under 282.
Â
The second five include Northern Illinois, host Saint Mary's, and Fresno State all tied at one-under 283. New Mexico is one shot in front of CCU after carding an even-par 284 with CCU and Colorado State tied for 10th at one-over 285.
Â
Rounding out the field is Loyola Marymount (+2, 286), Nevada (+2, 286), BYU(+2, 286), Long Beach State (+3, 287), Oregon State (+10, 294), Seattle (+11, 295), Washington State (+11, 295), and Pacific (+17, 301).
