Chanticleers Earn Eight All-C-USA Awards Tuesday

DALLAS – Following its first year as a member of Conference USA (C-USA), a total of seven Coastal Carolina men's soccer players were honored for their play this season as the Conference USA 2021 Men's Soccer Superlative Awards and All-Conference Teams were announced Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Nicholas Itopoulos, junior Emile Rzepecki, and freshman Alvaro Garcia-Pascual were all named to the All-Conference USA Second Team, while freshman Leon Schmidt, senior Marcelo Lage, and super-senior Oscar McConnell earned a spot on the All-Conference USA Third Team. Freshman Michael Fowler and Garcia-Pascual were each dubbed to the C-USA All-Freshman Team.
All awards are voted on by the league's nine head coaches. The Golden Boot Award is given to the player with the most goals in C-USA games, while the Golden Glove Award is given to the goalkeeper with the most shutouts in C-USA games.
The Chanticleers finished the 2021 regular season 6-4-4 (.571) overall and 3-1-4 (.625) in C-USA play to earn the No. 5 seed in the 2021 C-USA Men's Soccer Championship beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 10.
Itopoulos, the only Chanticleer to start all 14 matches this season, logged 1,337 minutes on the pitch and finished the season with one goal and one assist but was a key piece to CCU's backline helping the Chants earn four shutouts. The senior from Durban, South Africa, attempted six shots, putting two on goal.
Rzepecki finished the season with 972 total minutes, appearing in all 14 matches while starting 11. The Belfort, France native, notched one goal in CCU's 4-0 shutout against USC Upstate (Sept. 14) and also tallied an assist on the road against Marshall (Sept. 4). He attempted 14 shots, with four on goal.
Garcia-Pasqual, a native of Malaga, Spain, was the only true freshman to appear in 13 matches and earn 12 starts. He finished the season with five goals – including his first career brace against Marshall (Sept. 4) and two assists. Garcia-Pasqual recorded 12 points for the Chants while taking 44 shots, placing 23 on goal in 922 minutes of action. Notably, Garcia-Pasqual was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week following his performance against Marshall.
Schmidt, a native of Hamburg, Germany, appeared in 11 matches in goal, starting six on the season and saw 791 minutes of action. The freshman tallied 24 saves (.774), allowed just seven goals (0.80 GAA), and earned 2.5 shutouts. He finished the season with a 5-2-2 record between the posts.
Lage, a senior, was a key piece to the CCU backline having played in nine matches, making eight starts, and logging 719 total minutes. He notched two goals to earn four points for Coastal this season. The Middleton, Mass., native helped the Chanticleers earn three clean sheets.
McConnel made an immediate impact in the backline in his first year downing the Teal and Bronze, appearing in all 14 matches, starting 13, and logging 1,298 minutes (second on the team).
Fowler appeared in 10 matches with seven starts and notched a team-leading 14 points for the Chants with his six goals and two assists. The freshman from Sunderland, England recorded back-to-back two-goal performances for the Chanticleers against Northern Kentucky (Oct. 30) and College of Charleston (Nov. 3).
