CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team will be back in action to host another in-state rival Winthrop University Saturday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. ET. The game is the first game of a doubleheader and will be followed by the women's team hosting Wofford at 4 p.m. ET.
The Chanticleers are coming off their best performance of the season to date, an 80-56 win over in-state rival and Power 5 member South Carolina. The win moved CCU to 3-2 on the season.
COASTAL vs WINTHROP HISTORY
This will be the 84th meeting between the two programs, the longest-running series in program history for the Chanticleers. CCU holds a slim 43-40 edge in the series.
The home teams have a serious advantage in the series as CCU is 29-12 on their home court, while Winthrop holds a 28-13 lead in Rock Hill. The two teams have met once on a neutral site with CCU winning that contest.
Over the last 20 meetings between the two teams, the series is even at 10-10. The Chants have won three of the past four times the teams have met, including a come-from-behind 92-88 win in Rock Hill in 2019.
CCU holds the longest winning streak in the series at 15-straight wins that stretched from Jan. 20, 1989 to Jan. 7, 1995. Winthrop holds four winning streaks that reached four games.
ABOUT COASTAL
Sophomore
Essam Mostafa has had a strong start to the 2021-22 season. He picked up his third double-double of the season in CCU's win over South Carolina when he finished with game-highs in points (23) and rebounds (13). He is also leading the Sun Belt in scoring (19.4 ppg) and rebounding (11.0 rpg).
Mostafa has had a strong supporting cast in a couple of transfers.
Rudi Williams is second on the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game, while
Vince Cole is chipping in averaging 11.0 points per game.
CCU has not shot the ball well to begin the season, yet is still managing to average over 73 points per game, while only allowing 66.8. The opponents are only shooting 38 percent against CCU and an even worse 27 on their three-point attempts.
ABOUT WINTHROP
The Eagles enter the game with a 4-3 record and are coming off consecutive wins at Washington (82-74) and a home win over Hartford (82-75).
The Eagles will bring a high-scoring team into the HTC Center, averaging 82.3 points per game. DJ Burns is the team's scoring leader at 16.6 points per game. Other double-digit scorers are Patrick Good (14.1) and Cory Hightower (13.7), who also is the team's rebounding leader averaging 5.7 per game.
