Box Score BOONE, N.C. – Despite a career-high 27 points from sophomore guard
Deaja Richardson, the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team lost on the road to Appalachian State 79-65 in a Sun Belt Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
Appalachian State (10-10, 7-7 SBC) opened the game by scoring the first six points only to see Coastal respond with six unanswered to tie the game on a layup by
Aja Blount with 5:27 on the clock. The Chants would take what turned out to be their only lead of the game at 10-9 on a layup by
Ashley Saintigene with 2:58 to play in the opening quarter. With the game tied 12-12, App State scored the final five points of the opening quarter to take a 17-12 lead.
The Mountaineers' Pre Stanley connected on a driving layup following a steal with 3:12 to play in the second quarter that gave App State its largest lead of the first half at 38-23. A layup by Blount and then a long three-point basket by Richardson closed the gap to 10 points at 38-28 with 2:38 on the clock. With both teams struggling to score in the final two minutes, Michaela Porter closed the scoring with a layup that put App State up 40-28 at the break.
Coastal opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run, led by five points during the stretch by Richardson, to cut the lead to just four points at 42-38 with 6:10 on the clock. App State responded with eight unanswered points of its own and Tierra Wilson later connected on a three-point basket, her third of the third quarter, at the buzzer to regain a double-digit lead for the Mountaineers at 56-44 after three quarters of play.
App State maintained a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter, building leads as large as 21 points in sealing the victory.
In addition to Richardson's career-high performance, Blount posted her third double-double of the season for the Chanticleers with 17 points and 12 rebounds. The 12 rebounds tied Blount's career-high on the boards.
Lainey Gosnell led the way for Appalachian State with 16 points, while Wilson added 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Porter and Stanley added 14 points each for the Mountaineers.
