Chanticleers open up the home slate with a win

CONWAY, S.C. – The shorthanded Coastal Carolina women's tennis team rallied to defeat UNCW 4-3 on a cold Thursday afternoon at the Lynn Stevens Tennis Complex.

Thursday's win is the sixth-straight home win for Coastal dating back to last season and the fifth consecutive win over the Seahawks.

UNCW got off to an early 1-0 lead as it captured the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court one and earned a win at the third doubles match due to a forfeit.

CCU freshman Jesse Hollins got Coastal on the board first with her first win as a Chant in straight-sets 6-1, 6-0 at No.4, while fellow freshman Mathilde Tranberg followed at No. 2 with another straight-sets win at 6-4, 6-0.

With Coastal having to forfeit the match at No. 6, freshman Isabella Weatherhead tied the match up at 3-3 with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win on court five. The win was the first of Weatherhead's CCU career.

To decide the match it came down to the first quarter, as reigning Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week Somer Dalla-Bona overcame a second-set loss to sweep Celeste Matute in the third set, 6-0 (6-2, 4-6, 6-0).

The Chanticleers will return to action on the road versus Charleston Southern in Charleston, S.C. on Friday, Feb. 12. The match is set for a 1 p.m. ET start time.
