Chants Downed 5-3 in Loss to South Alabama to Open Up Sun Belt Series

Coastal falls to 7-10 overall on the season, 1-3 in the Sun Belt

CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina softball team fell to South Alabama (14-8, 4-0 SBC) on Friday at St. John Stadium by the score of 5-3 to open up the three-game conference series. CCU falls to 7-10 overall on the season and 1-3 in conference play in the loss.

Jaguars starter Olivia Lackie earned the victory as she allowed three runs in the complete-game, seven strikeout performance.

The Chanticleers had the Jags ace, Lackie, reeling in the bottom of the fourth inning as they took a 2-0 lead.

Back-to-back homers by junior Abbey Montoya and senior Courtney Dean gave Coastal the advantage at the end of four innings of play with their second and third home runs on the season, respectively.

Jags' Caroline Nichols reached base off Coastal starter Kaitlin Beasley-Polko to lead-off the fifth inning, which led to three South Alabama runs.

Nichols reached base on an error by the Coastal defense and then stole second and third base before she scored on a Mackenzie Brasher single to right field that cut the CCU lead to a run. Kennedy Cronan's sacrifice fly and Victoria Ortiz's infield single gave the Jags 3-2 lead with a pair of RBI.

Abby Krzywiecki extended the USA lead to 5-2 over the Chants in the top half of the sixth inning with a two-run homer off Beasley-Polko, her second home run of the season.

CCU's Iyanla De Jesus cut into South Alabama lead at 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning with her second home run of the season.

Lackie would not allow another Coastal run over the final two innings of work on her way to her conference-leading 10th win of the season.

Beasley-Polko fell to 5-5 in the loss but earned her seventh complete game on the year. The Leonardtown, Md., native allowed 11 hits, five runs, three earned, with six strikeouts in the loss

Of the five Chanticleers hits on the day, Montoya and Dean led the squad with two hits apiece.

Brasher had a game-high three hits for the Jaguars in the victory.

Coastal and South Alabama will return to the diamond on Saturday for game two of the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
