CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker on Wednesday afternoon as the Campbell Camels scored the game-winning goal as time expired to beat the Chanticleers 8-7 in Conway, S.C.
With the loss, Coastal fell to 6-3 on the year while the Camels improved to 3-4 on the season.
Redshirt freshman
Kayla Downey led the Chants' offense with three goals while being aided by
Megan Busch,
Lauren Cremen,
Abbey Buchanan, and
Megan Bozzi who all added one goal apiece.
In the Coastal defensive third,
Claire Martell made 10 saves in the tough-luck loss while
Nicole Navan and
Anya McSorley caused three turnovers each. McSorley scooped a team-high five ground balls to push the attack to the offensive end.
CCU's Busch opened the scoring with a little more than two minutes expiring from the game clock as she beat the visiting goalkeeper for the 1-0 advantage.
Campbell evened the score at 1-1 as Sam Bischoff found the back of the net with 25:14 remaining in the first half before Mackenzie Kolesar pushed the Camels in front 2-1 on a free position goal with 18:03 until the intermission.
The Chanticleers' Bozzi used a crossover step-through to even the score at 2-2 with just under 12 minutes remaining until halftime.
The Camels scored the next three goals to go up 5-2 as Bischoff (5:26, 2:13) scored twice and Megan Matthews (1:30) put the fifth goal on the board.
The reigning Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Cremen filled the net up with 13 seconds remaining until the break to pull the Chants to 5-3 at halftime.
Just as in the first half, Coastal would score first in the second period as true freshman
Monica Manley hit a wide-open Downey in front of the net for the first goal of the second half with 26:45 remaining to trail 5-4. Downey followed up three minutes later with her second goal of the game as teammate
Avery Drouin found the redshirt freshman to even the match at 5-5 for CCU.
Campbell would jump back out front at 6-5 with seven minutes remaining to play as Julianna Sanchez put the Camels back in front as Lizzie Yurchak tallied her second assist of the contest.
The Chants fought back to even up the contest at 6-6 as Busch found a wide-open Buchanan with 6:21 remaining on the game clock. Downey capped the CCU scoring and the hat trick for a 7-6 lead as Bozzi recorded her fourth assist of the season with 3:42 left to play.
However, too much time was on the clock, as the Camels' Matthews hit teammate Ally Heath as she dove to the goal evening the match up at 7-7.
With overtime looming and the game clock running down, Matthews somehow found the back of the net as time expired to give Campbell the 8-7 win.
