SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team fell to the UC Davis Aggies 17-6 in a neutral site matchup in San Diego, Calif., on Monday afternoon. With the loss, the Chanticleers' record dropped to 7-4 on the year while the Aggies improved to 6-3 with the victory.
The Chants' offense was led by
Kayla Downey (two goals) and
Avery Snyder (two goals), while
Samantha Courtemanche and
Lauren Cremen finished with one goal apiece.
On the defensive third,
Anya McSorley and
Emily D'Orsaneo each had three caused turnovers for the Chanticleers while scooping up two and three ground balls each, respectively.
The Aggies were led by Sorana Larson (five goals, two assists), Kate Graham (three goals, one assist), and Maddie Myers (three goals) offensively, while on the defensive third Taylor Mathieson picked up the win in goal by allowing four goals and making seven saves.
UC Davis opened the scoring in the first period as Alex Agnew found the back of the net off the Larson assist with 27:33 remaining in the first half.
The Chants battled back to even the match at 1-1 off a Downey free-position goal with 24:41 left to the intermission before the Aggies would retake the lead as Kendall Seifert scored with 23:34 remaining until the half off of Larson's second assist.
With 18:19 left until halftime, CCU's Courtemanche knotted the contest at 2-2 on a feed from teammate
Avery Drouin.
Myers again gave the Aggies the lead at 3-2 with 16:56 on the clock on an unassisted goal before Coastal's Downey scored her second goal of the match to pull the Chants even at 3-3 with 16:14 remaining in the half.
After the back-and-forth scoring, UC Davis scored 10 unanswered goals to take a commanding 13-3 advantage. The Aggies tallied the final eight goals of the first half for an 11-3 halftime lead and then scored the first two goals to open the scoring in the second half to push the lead to 13-3 with 26:38 remaining to play.
CCU's Snyder ended the run to cut the Aggies' lead to 13-4 with 24:17 before UCD scored the next four goals for the 17-4 advantage.
Snyder and Cremen closed the scoring for the final margin as Snyder filled the net with 5:40 left to play and then assisted on Cremen's tally with 4:13 remaining in the contest.
Coastal Carolina will remain on the road as the Chants will travel across the state to Greenville, S.C., to take on Southern Conference foe Furman on Saturday, April 3, with the opening draw scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
