GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team fell 13-10 in a close contest to the Furman Paladins in Greenville, S.C. on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Chanticleers dropped to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in Southern Conference play while the Paladins improved to 6-3 on the year and 1-0 in conference action.
Coastal's offensive attack was led by
Megan Bozzi and
Lauren Cremen with three goals apiece while
Kayla Downey added two of her own.
Sarah Trupp and
Abbey Buchanan caused three turnovers each on the defensive side of the field.
Furman's offense was paced by Meagan Beal and Kyra LaMotte with five and four goals, respectively. On the defensive third, the quartette of Beal, Sydney Catts, Rachel Sindler, and Avery McIlwaine caused two turnovers apiece while Regan Lingo scooped eight ground balls.
The Paladins' Beal put the host squad up 1-0 with just 1:04 expiring off the game clock from the assist by Hannah Dintino. LaMotte followed three minutes later with an unassisted goal for the 2-0 lead.
The Chants answered with 24:33 left in the opening half as Bozzi filled the back of the net to cut the lead in half at 2-1 before Cremen knotted the match up at 2-2 just 42 seconds later.
In a back-and-forth contest, Furman's LaMotte scored her 31st goal of the season with 21:31 remaining until halftime for the 3-2 Paladin advantage. Dintino pushed the Furman lead to 4-2 on an unassisted tally with 17:37 remaining until the intermission.
Coastal answered back with two quick goals to even the score at 4-4 as
Avery Drouin scored a free-position goal with 14:08 on the game clock which was quickly followed by Downey's first goal off the assist from Bozzi with just 36 seconds expiring off the clock.
The Paladins' scored the final three goals of the opening half as Beal (11:28), Hannah Demis (6:20), and LaMotte (5:08) gave the home team a 7-4 advantage at the half.
Samantha Courtemanche found teammate Cremen with a difficult pass in front of the net to put the first points on the scoreboard in the second period for the Chanticleers to cut the score to 7-5 with 26:52 remaining to play. Bozzi added her second tally of the day cutting the lead to 7-6 two minutes later.
Furman pushed the lead back to three as Dintino (22:12) scored to make it 8-6 before Beal (19:59) made it 9-6 off the assist from Sophie Shaw.
CCU's Bozzi cut the lead to 9-7 on the woman-up and the hat trick goal with 16 minutes left to play before the Paladins answered with two goals by Catts (13:18) and Beal (12:39) for the 11-7 advantage.
The Chants cut the lead to three at 11-8 as Cremen found the back of the net with 10:31 left to play.
Furman and Coastal closed out the scoring as each squad put back-to-back tallies for the final 13-10 margin. The Paladins' Beal (8:01) and LaMotte (6:40) scored their 20th and 33rd goals of the year as CCU's Snyder (3:59) and Downey (2:46) answered for the visitors.
Coastal Carolina will close out the four-game road trip on Saturday, April 10, as the Chanticleers will travel to Lynchburg, Va. to battle former conference foe the Liberty Flames. The opening draw is scheduled for noon ET.
