Coastal Carolina’s final tune-up before the Sun Belt Conference Tournament
CONWAY, S.C. – The Chanticleers will return to the links for competition this weekend, April 9-10, at the Stitch Intercollegiate hosted by NC State at the MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary, N.C.
The tournament will consist of 36 holes on Friday and 18 holes on Saturday and each team will play as a fivesome per COVID-19 precautions and recommendations.
Along with No. 86 Coastal Carolina, the tournament field includes No. 26 Notre Dame, No. 40 Duke, No. 55 East Tennessee State, No. 76 Campbell, No. 85 College of Charleston, No. 89 Denver, No. 108 Virginia Tech, No. 128 Davidson, No. 133 East Carolina, and No. 162 Elon (rankings based on latest Golfstat rankings).
Coastal head coach Jim Garren will use the lineup of Zack Taylor, Seth Taylor, Tyler Gray, Garrett Cooper, and States Fort this weekend.
Zack Taylor leads the Chants this season with a 71.91 stroke average over his 23 rounds of play. He has posted three top-five finishes and recorded 14 rounds of par or better on the year, including four rounds in the 60's. Last time out at The Hayt, the fifth-year senior carded rounds of 75, 79, and 71 to place in a tie for 50th overall with a 54-hole score of 225, +9.
Sophomore Seth Taylor has played in all eight tournaments on the season for the Chants and has recorded a 74.57 season stroke average overall. The Gaffney, S.C. native was the top Chant performer at The Hayt, turning in rounds of 74, 73, and 71 to place in a tie for 18th overall at 218, +2.
One of three individual medalists this season, Gray has played in eight events this year and registered a season stroke average of 73.83 over his 23 rounds of play. The junior Chant has tallied nine rounds of par or better on the season, including a low-round 66, and is coming off rounds of 75, 79, and 73 for a 54-hole score of 227, +11, in Florida at The Hayt.
Cooper joins the lineup for the first time this season after a CCU career-low 54-hole tournament score of 210, 6-under par. Playing as an individual at the Golfweek Spring Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Cooper was named the Sun Belt Men's Golfer of the Week as the sophomore carded a career-low round 67, 5-under par, on the final round of play to jump 14 spots up the player leaderboard and finish in a tie for fifth overall.
Fort anchors the Chants' lineup, as the fifth-year senior has posted a season stroke average of 72.07 over five tournaments this spring, highlighted by a win at the Any Given Intercollegiate in January. Fort has registered eight rounds of par or better this spring and will look to bounce back from his last outing in which he shot a 227, +11, at The Hayt.
Tee times for Friday are between 8 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. off of holes No. 1 and 10.
