Chants Swept By No. 13 Louisiana in Saturday Doubleheader

Coastal falls percentage points behind App State for seventh-place of the SBC with the two losses

CONWAY, S.C. – On Saturday, the Coastal Carolina softball team had their eight-game winning streak snapped as they dropped both games of their doubleheader to the No. 13 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns by the score of 7-2 and 7-0 at St. John Stadium.

The losses dropped CCU to 19-21 overall, and 7-13 in Sun Belt Conference play, while the first-place Ragin' Cajuns improved to 37-9 overall with a record of 18-2 in conference play.

LA 7, CCU 2 (Game 1)

Louisiana's Kendall Talley led the visitors to the victory in game one with a three-run home run, pair of sacrifice flies, and five RBI as she went 1-for-2 at the plate.

The Cajuns jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Coastal starter Iyanla De Jesus in the first inning but pushed their advantage to 3-0 after two innings of play when Julie Rawls hit a sharp line drive to Chants' first baseman Kayla Rosado. The ball squirted away from the corner infielder, which allowed Ciara Bryan to score. Talley connected with her first of two sacrifice flies in game one to extend the lead to 3-0.

However, on Rosado's senior day, the Oradell, N.J., native brought the Chants within two runs, with her seventh home run of the season off the Louisiana starter Kandra Lamb, which cut the deficit to 3-1.

Talley capped off the victory against De Jesus with her second home run of the season, a three-run long ball to straight-away center field to put LA up by the score of 6-1 after five innings.

The Cajuns added a run in the seventh, but Coastal senior Courtney Dean hit her seventh homer of the season in the bottom of the inning off Louisiana' reliever Vanessa Foreman to finish the scoring on both sides.

Lamb improved to 15-4 on the season as she worked the first 4.1 innings, allowed one run, three hits, and struck out three Chanticleers.

Foreman pitched 2.1 innings of relief to close out the 7-2 victory. The lefty allowed one run, one hit to go along with a pair of strikeouts.

Rosado led CCU with a 2-for-3 game-one performance, with the previously mentioned home run.

De Jesus dropped to 5-7 on the season as she allowed seven hits, seven runs, six earned, six walks, and struck out five Cajuns.

LA 7, CCU 0 (Game 2)

Combined with three Ragin' Cajun home runs, Louisiana starting pitcher Summer Ellyson improved to 17-5 on the season as she kept the Chanticleers hitless through 4.2 innings. She surrendered a fifth-inning single to Coastal third baseman Ally Clegg that broke up the no-hit bid.

Ellyson earned the victory in game two as she worked 5.2 innings, allowed just two hits, one walk, and struck out six Coastal batters.

LA batters Jade Gortarez (2), Justice Milz (2), and Bailey Curry (2) combined for six of the 10 Cajun hits, as each player had a home run in the 7-0, game-two victory off Coastal Carolina starter Kaitlin Beasley-Polko.

Along with Clegg, Iyanla De Jesus, and senior Makiya Thomas picked up a hit. Thomas extended her hitting streak to four games as she went 1-for-3 in the defeat.

Beasley-Polko dropped 9-9 on the season as she allowed seven runs, five earned, three walks in six innings of work in game two.

The Chanticleers look to salvage the final game of the three-game set as the two teams will square off on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. ET in the series finale.
