(RV) Men's Soccer Battles with FAU to Double-Overtime Draw

CONWAY, S.C. – The (RV) Coastal Carolina men's soccer team remains unbeaten in its first season as a member of Conference USA (C-USA) as the Chanticleers battled the visiting Florida Atlantic (FAU) Owls to a 1-1 double-overtime draw, Tuesday night at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

With the draw, the Chanticleers are now 2-1-4 overall and 1-0-4 in C-USA play while the Owls are now 4-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference action.

"I thought FAU was very good tonight," head coach Shaun Docking said. "They had the better first half, but I was very pleased [with how] we responded in the second half. If you said, we'd be unbeaten in the conference after five games – I'd be pleased with not having lost a conference game [after five]."

Florida Atlantic needed just 11 minutes to break the 0-0 scoreline, as Tom Abrahamsson connected on a pass from Alonso Coello Camarero nearly 45-yards out and fired his shot into the back of the net, putting the visitors up 1-0.

The Chants tried to net the equalizer minutes later, as Olle Brorsson connected on a corner kick in the 28th minute that he headed to the wide left of the goal for the Chants' first shot of the match.

In a highly competitive match that saw eight yellow cards and a red, Coastal equalized in the 79th minute as Marcello Jones recorded his second goal in as many matches on a rebounded ball off the FAU keeper on a shot from Michael Fowler to tie the match a 1-all.

Neither team was able to find the go-ahead goal, and the Chanticleers headed to their fourth overtime match of the 2021 season.

The Chants' Alvaro Garcia-Pasqual was shown his second yellow card of the night, which becomes a red, in the 99th minute - resulting in CCU playing a man down for the remaining 11 minutes.

Coastal Carolina held the advantage in total shots 22-4, while also recording an 11-2 shots on frame edge over FAU. The Owls found the advantage in the box, recording 10 saves to the Chanticleers' one. Notably, CCU tallied eight corner kicks to FAU's one.

The Chanticleers now prepare for back-to-back non-conference matches, as they welcome UNC Greensboro to Conway on Sept. 28 before hosting in-state foe No. 2 Clemson on Oct. 5.
