CONWAY, S.C. – With just 22 seconds left in the first overtime period, (RV) UNC Greensboro found the back of the net to hand the Coastal Carolina men's soccer program just its second loss of the 2021 season, 1-0 Tuesday night at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
With the loss, the Chanticleers fall to 2-2-4 overall but remain unbeaten in C-USA play at 1-0-4 while the Spartans improve to 7-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in SoCon play.
"Disappointed to lose the game in overtime - like that," head coach
Shaun Docking said. "I thought [UNC] Greensboro were excellent tonight, they've got a very good team. It was a tough loss but something we can learn from and move on with and get ready for [Clemson]."
Michael Fowler looked to put the Chants on the board early as the freshman's shot in the eighth minute was saved by UNCG's Niclas Wild. It would be over thirty minutes before either team took another shot in the first half, as
Leon Schmidt recorded his first of a career-high four saves in goal for the home-standing Chants.
Both teams looked to break the 0-0 score, taking nine combined shots in the second half, but neither was able to break the scoreline - and Coastal headed to its fifth overtime match of the season.
A corner kick was all the Spartans needed in the 100th minute as Angel Bacho sent a ball into the box that was blocked before Marco Milanese recovered the loose ball and fired off a shot to give UNCG the golden goal.
UNCG ended the night with a 12-4 shooting advantage and a 5-1 advantage in shots on frame.
Emile Rzepecki recorded a team-leading two shots for the Chants. Coastal found the advantage in saves as
Schmidt earned his first start of the season. The Spartans also found the advantage in corner kicks, 8-6.
The Chanticleers remain at home and prepare to welcome in-state foe and No. 19 nationally-ranked Clemson to the CCU Soccer Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 5. The kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Conway.
