CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team will take to the road for the second-consecutive week for a Sun Belt Conference road matchup at conference newcomer James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. Coastal will take on the Dukes on Thursday, Oct. 20, and Friday, Oct. 21, with both matches scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
HISTORY BETWEEN COASTAL & JAMES MADISON
The Chanticleers and JMU will be meeting for just the fourth time and the first as SBC foes. The Dukes hold a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series. CCU's lone win came on Dec 2, 2016, as the Chants knocked JMU out of the NCAA Championship Tournament with a 3-2 win in the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament win in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Coastal was led by former Chant
Annayka Legros,
Leah Hardeman, and
Tahleia Bishop with 19, 14, and 14 kills, respectively.
Sarah Boothe finished with 40 assists, while
Carla Cahill totaled 17 digs.
ABOUT COASTAL
The Chanticleers enter the matchup at 15-6 overall and 7-1 in Sun Belt action on the season after splitting two conference matches with the Old Dominion Monarchs last week. Outside hitter
Ella Saada led the Chants' offense with a total of 44 kills combined over both contests, while setter
Brigitta Petrenko tallied 78 assists, eight kills, and nine service aces.
For her play, Saada was named Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week. It was the second weekly conference award for the Kfar Masaryk, Israel native.
Defensively, CCU blocked a combined 11 shots as
Christina Nance and Saada paced the defense with five blocks each, while
Lina Perugini (21), Saada (16), and
Paulina Perez Rosas (11) combined for 48 digs of the Chants' 73 total digs.
This season, the Chants' offense has been led by Saada with 194 kills on the year, while Perez Rosas and
Agata Lesiak have added 186 and 136 spikes, respectively. Petrenko is the team's assist and service ace leader, as the Eger, Hungary, native has 712 assists and a Sun Belt-leading 43 service aces on the year.
Defensively, Coastal Carolina has totaled 181 blocks as a team, highlighted by Nance with a total of 65 blocks, Shepherd with 49 blocks, and Petrenko and Lesiak with 42 and 31 blocks, respectively. Perugini has picked up 334 digs in the 78 sets played, giving the Bethlehem, Pa., native 1,535 career digs. Perugini surpassed Katie Knutson (1999-02) and currently sits third on the all-time digs list.
ABOUT JAMES MADISON
James Madison will enter play this weekend with a 13-4 overall record and sit at 7-1 in Sun Belt play. The Dukes picked up a pair of four-set wins over Georgia State last weekend.
As a team, JMU has recorded 813 kills, 741 assists, and 111 service aces on the offensive attack. Miette Veldman leads the attack with 251 spikes, while Sophie Davis (172) and Danielle Nathan (108) have both put down 100 or more kills on the year. Setter Caroline Dozier leads the team with 555 set assists, while Madilyn O'Toole leads five Dukes in double-digit service aces with 27.
Defensively, James Madison has stopped 166.0 kill attempts while also digging 830 of their opponent's shots. The net is protected by Davis (86), Annie Smith (39), and Dozier (37), as they are the only JMU blockers with 35 or more stops on the season. Defensive specialist Jaydyn Clemmer leads the team with 203 digs, along with Veldman, who has added 131 digs on the year.
