CARY, N.C. – Highlighted by a pair of wins from Carlos Berna Ruiz, the Coastal Carolina men's tennis team totaled six wins in the Main Singles Draw on day one of the 2022 ITA Carolina Regional Championships on Friday, Oct. 21, in Cary, N.C.
 
Berna Ruiz showed resiliency all day long, as the second-year Chant posted a 7-5, 6-3 win in round 128 over Abhimanyu Vannemreddy of Charlotte. He then carried that momentum over into the round of 64, posting a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win over Andrew Dale of Duke to advance to the round of 32 on Saturday.
 
Newcomer Lucas Wayenburg scored a 6-1, 7-5 win over Richard Trey Mallory of UNCW in round 128 but fell in the second round of play in a tightly-contested bout, 7-5, 6-4, to Faris Khan of Duke to fall into the consolation bracket.
 
Like Wayenburg, Steve Mundt won his first-round match in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 over Davidson's Max Kachkarov, yet suffered a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Fons Van Sambeek of NC State in the round of 64.
 
CCU's Maj Tomac also registered a first-round win on Friday in singles play, as the transfer held on for a 6-4, 6-4 win over Matt Pitts of Clemson in the round of 128 before taking a 6-2, 6-1 defeat to Pedro Rodenas of Duke in the round of 64.
 
After suffering a first-round loss in the main draw, freshman Rivers Cahill stayed alive in the consolation bracket with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 first-round win over Juan diego Rojas of the College of Charleston.
