CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team picked up an important Sun Belt Conference win with a 2-1 victory over Old Dominion Sunday night at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Chants move to 4-3-6 overall and remain undefeated in conference action at 1-0-5, while ODU now stands 6-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the Sun Belt Conference with the loss.
The Chanticleers were on the offensive early and often in the opening 45 minutes with
Alvaro Garcia-Pascual chipping the ball over the ODU goalie after receiving a pass from
Maurice Hauser in the 25th minute.
Hauser mirrored Garcia-Pascual's goal from beyond 40 yards out with less than a minute to play in the first half. After receiving an assist from
Alex Kinateder, Hauser caught the ODU goalie out a little too far from the net and chipped a shot into the goal from just across midfield to double the Chants' lead at 2-0 before the halftime break.
ODU came out in the second half a lot more aggressive and was able to capitalize on their aggressiveness with a goal from Jan Marpe on an assist from Tristan Jenkins in the 59th minute.
"I'm delighted with the win," head coach
Shaun Docking said. "I thought we played really well in the first half and then had to dig in a lot more in the second half. We got some luck in the game tonight because Old Dominion was very good tonight and was much better in the second half, but we hung in there, we battled hard, and we got a really great result tonight."
The Chants ended the game, with 10 total shots and seven of those on goal, while the Monarchs finished with six shots, four of those on frame.
Joey Batrouni was big in goal for the Chanticleers, finishing the game with three saves.
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Chants, as they travel to Harrisonburg, Va., to face the Dukes of James Madison on Friday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. ET.
