CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina redshirt senior cornerback
Lance Boykin has been named the East-West Shrine Bowl "Breakout Defensive Player" of the week for his play in the win over Southern Miss on Saturday, Nov. 12.
He received an invitation to the 98th East-West Shrine Bowl, which will be held on Feb. 2, 2023, in Las Vegas, Nev., last week.
In the Chants' 26-23 win over Southern Miss, Boykin finished with three total tackles and four pass breakups, including two in the end zone, as the Golden Eagles scored just two touchdowns in five trips to the red zone.
This season, the co-captain is second on the team with 46 tackles from the defensive secondary. He is also tied for the team lead with two interceptions, both of which came in the home win over Gardner-Webb on Sept. 10, and has added 1.5 tackles-for-loss, 1.0 sack, one forced fumble, and a team-high eight pass breakups this year.
The second-year Chant has posted a career-high seven tackles three times this season – versus Buffalo (Sept. 17), at ULM (Oct. 8), and at Marshall (Oct. 29) – and has forced three turnovers this year with two interceptions and one forced fumble.
Over his two seasons at CCU, after transferring in from Old Dominion, Boykin has tallied 70 tackles, 4.0 tackles-for-loss, 2.0 sacks, three interceptions, eight pass breakups, and forced one fumble.
The Chanticleers broke back into the top 25 in both the Associated Press and USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches polls this week, coming in at No. 23 in both polls.
The East-West Shrine Bowl is the longest-running college all-star football game in the nation. The East-West Shrine Bowl is an important part of America's football tradition, giving top college players a chance to showcase their talents to NFL scouts and a national television audience.
For more than 90 years, some of football's greatest athletes and coaches have contributed to the tradition of the East-West Shrine Bowl. Players like Gale Sayers, Tom Brady, John Elway, Allan Page, Dick Butkus, Brett Favre, Gino Marchetti, and Walter Payton, along with coaches Don Shula, Dick Vermeil, Paul "Bear" Bryant, and Jerry Glanville, to name a few, have supported the East-West Shrine Bowl.
