Chanticleers to Travel to Georgia to Open Season

The Pederson era in women’s basketball is underway

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team will open the 2022-23 season on the road in Athens, Ga., on Monday, Nov. 7, as the Chanticleers will take on Southeastern Conference opponent Georgia. The opening tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET at the Stegeman Coliseum.
 
The game will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams on the hardwood. Coastal was picked to finish 12th in the Sun Belt Conference in the preseason coaches poll.
 
ABOUT COASTAL
 
After closing the 2021-22 season with a 15-11 overall record and 4-9 in the SBC play, the Chanticleers enter the season under the leadership of new head coach Kevin Pederson. Pederson will be coaching in his 22nd season overall and the first at the helm in Conway.
 
The Chants averaged 72.3 points per game while shooting 42.8 percent from the field and a shooting percentage of 29.2 from three-point range. Defensively, Coastal allowed 61.8 points per game and held its opponents to 36.4 shooting percentage from the floor and 27.2 from behind the three-point arch. The Chanticleers won the rebound battle by grabbing 45.9 boards per game, while letting their opponents grab 34.1 rebounds per contest.
 
Coastal will return sophomores Arin Freeman and Angie Juste-Jean, who averaged 9.0 and 8.2 points per game, respectively. Senior Deaja Richardson, sophomore Jordyn Newsome, sophomore Arielle-Vadrelle Belinga, and Brali Simmons all return after seeing significant playing time last year.
 
CCU will mix in transfers Helena Delaruelle, Miriam Recarte, Amaya Adams, B'Aunce Carter, and Anaya Barney with the young nucleus of returners.
 
ABOUT GEORGIA
 
The Georgia Bulldogs return five players from the 2021-22 team that finished last season with a 21-10 record and finished 9-7 in the SEC. UGA's top returning scorer is Malury Bates with 5.1 points per game while Zoesha Smith and Chloe Chapman are right behind Bates with 3.0 and 2.6 points per game, respectively.
 
As a team, the Bulldogs averaged 68.4 points per game while allowing 59.1 points per game while outshooting their opponents 42.8 percent to 37.8 percent from the floor. Georgia averaged 40.6 rebounds per game, while allowing its opponents to grab 35.3 boards per contest.
