Chants Power Past Pirates on Saturday
 
CONWAY, S.C. – On Saturday morning, the Coastal Carolina women's tennis team collided with East Carolina in non-conference play at the Stevens Tennis Complex.  It was the Chants early and often, as they pulled away to a 5-2 triumph over the visiting Pirates.
 
CCU started off very strong in doubles play, as the home team swept all four matches in that portion of the contest, which included the exhibition match on court No. 4.  In the top flight, Mathilde Tranberg and Paola Landin Lopez held off Ines Bachir and Alisha Hussain 6-4.  On the second court, Victoire De Samucewicz and Jesse Hollins doubled up Sofia Cerezo Holgado and Alisa Diercksen 6-3.  In the No. 3 match, Valentina Urelli and Anna Babayan cruised to a 6-1 victory over Anne Lou Champion and Isabella Rivera Orti.  The tandem of Megan Hopton and Isabella Weatherhead also tallied a solid 6-2 win over Laura Becker and Martina Muzzolon 6-2 on court No. 4.
 
In singles action, Coastal Carolina continued its outstanding play with a pair of straight-set victories.  On the sixth court, Hollins defeated Bachir 6-4, 6-2, while De Samucewicz rallied in the second frame to defeat Hussain 6-2, 7-5 on the second court. Freshman Anna Babayan bounced back from a tough opening frame in the No. 4 match and picked up a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 win, which secured the victory for the home side.  Paola Landin Lopez also notched a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 victory in the third flight.
 
Next up for the Chanticleers is the second of a two-game homestand on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. ET against College of Charleston.
