Connor Newton shoots a four-under 68
HENDERSON, Nev. – The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team shot a two-over 290 to open play at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate Monday afternoon at the Reflection Bay Golf Club to end the round tied for ninth.
Senior Connor Newton led the Chanticleers on the opening day of action. He shot a four-under 68 (35-33) while holing a team-best six birdies, and having two bogeys and 10 pars. He is tied for 5th heading into the second round.
Seth Taylor also had a solid first round with an even-par 72 (35-37). He is tied for 24th after day one. Tyler Gray carded a two-over 74 (41-33) and is tied for 43rd.
Trey Crenshaw was only two strokes back with a four-over 76 (37-39), and is tied for 63rd, while Luke Nelson finished eight-over with an 80 (36-44) placing him 83nd.
Playing as an individual, Garrett Cooper is tied for 43rd after joining Gray with a two-over 73 (38-36).
St. Mary's was the class of the 15-team field in the opening round finishing with a 12-under 276. Sun Belt Conference foe Little Rock and West Virginia are tied for second, five strokes behind after shooting a seven-under 281. UAB is fourth with a two-under 286 and Kansas City is fifth after carding a one-under 287.
Oregon State, Utah, and Kentucky are tied for sixth after finishing even-par in today's action. Michigan is tied with CCU for ninth at two-over 290.
Rounding out the field are High Point (+3, 291), Arkansas State (+4, 292), Louisiana (+7, 295). Georgia State and Rocky Mountain College tied for 14th with a 15-over 303.
