CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team opened up the home portion of its 2022 schedule with a pair of victories on Saturday, March 19, defeating Tusculum 4-1 and sweeping Erskine 5-0 on day one of the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, S.C.
With the two wins, CCU moved to 13-4 overall on the season and extended its winning streak to five consecutive wins.
Coastal Carolina 4, Tusculum 1
CCU opened its first day of play with a 4-1 win over Tusculum in the Sandy Chants' 2022 home opener. The win was the Chants' second over the Pioneers this season and put CCU at 4-0 all-time versus Tusculum.
Coastal took an early 1-0 match lead with a 21-18, 21-14 win at the No. 5 flight by the duo of
Raychel Ehlers and
Carli Ginther only to see the Pioneers tie the match up at 1-1 with a 21-19, 21-11 victory at court No. 4.
That loss would be the last for the Chants for the match, as the pair of
Irena Drobnjak and
Madie Lichty won by a score of 21-14, 21-16 at the No. 2 flight, while the No. 1 flight of
Sarah Riedell and
Martine Kragholm sealed the match win for the home-standing Chanticleers with a 21-14, 21-13 victory.
To cap the win, the tandem of
Natalie Honzovicova and
Ellie Hanford remained hot on court No. 3, winning 21-15, 21-17 to give the Chanticleers the 4-1 win.
Coastal Carolina 5, Erskine 0
CCU moved to 5-0 all-time versus Erskine, including going 2-0 this season, with a 5-0 sweep of the Erskine Flying Fleet in the final match of the day.
The Chants did not drop a set in the 5-0 win, as Ehlers and Ginther won 21-15, 21-9 at the No. 5 flight, while the No. 4 pair of
Emma Gonzalez and
Madison Allred earned a 21-16, 21-18 win to put the home team up 2-0.
CCU head coach
Steve Loeswick mixed and matched the lineup in the second match of the day, as the tandem of Lichty and
Elena Sanchez held on to win 25-23, 21-11 on court No. 3, while the team-leading duo in wins in Honzovicova and Hanford moved up to the No. 2 flight and won rather easily at 21-15, 21-18.
The pair of Kragholm and Riedell capped the match with a 21-15, 21-15 victory at the No. 1 flight to seal the 5-0 win over the Flying Fleet, the Sandy Chants' sixth sweep of the year.
