Chants shoot six-under in the final round
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team shot a 6-under 278 in Tuesday's final round at the Lewis Chitengwa Invitational to finish the event in eighth place with an even-par 852 (282-292-278).
CCU's six-under 278 final round was the best round of the day, while the Chants' 54-hole final team score of 852 was their best tournament score of the season.
The Chants had three players card a three-under 68 in today's final round led by Garrett Cooper who finished the event with a season-best two-under 211 (70-73-68), while Connor Newton also finished the event with a two-under 211 (71-72-68). They finished the event tied for 14th overall.
The day's other 68 belonged to Seth Taylor who recorded a consistent 34-34 in the final round. He finished with a three-over 216 (76-72-68), improving his score by four strokes in each round. He finished the event tied for 34th.
Both Tyler Gray and Trace McDonald shot 75 in today's action and each finished the event tied for 51st with a three-round score of seven-over 220. Gray's final tally came on scores of 70-75-75, while McDonald picked up his 220 with rounds of 71-75-74 rounds.
Host Virginia started the day one stroke off the lead but shot a four-under in the final round to win their event with a score of 15-under 837. Tennessee shot a two-under in the final around to finish second overall and just one stroke back at 14-under 838. Rounding out the top five were North Florida (-11, 841), Charlotte (-10, 840), and Kentucky (-8, 844).
Liberty (-6, 846) and Virginia Tech (-1, 851) were in front of the Chanticleers with Virginia's B team (+6, 858) and Maryland (+14, 866) rounding out the top-10. The rest of the field included St. Mary's (+15, 867), East Carolina (+18, 870), Sun Belt rival Texas State (+19, 871), and Loyola Maryland (+32, 884).
The tournament was the Chanticleers' final regular-season match of the season. CCU will next be on the course for the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship, which will be held April 24-27, at the Mystic Creek Golf Club in El Dorado, Ark.
