CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team opened its exhibition season in convincing fashion on Wednesday night, scoring a 4-1 victory over former Big South foe Winthrop at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
Megan Brouse headlined the first half for the Chants as the senior tallied her first brace of the season with goals in the 19th and 23rd minute, respectively. Brouse's first goal came from a rebound off the Winthrop goalkeeper which she rocketed into the top corner of the net. The Phoenix, Ariz., native found the back of the net for the second time nearly five minutes later on a pass from
Casey O'Connor to make the score 2-0.
The Eagles looked to answer in the 30th minute, as Chela Parris cut CCU's lead in half as she connected on a pass from teammate Erika Brown to put the visitors on the scoreboard.
Following the halftime break, O'Connor increased the hosts' lead to 3-1 when the junior collected a pass from
Sarah Allen in the 58th minute.
It was a newcomer party in the 79th minute, as freshman
Julia Ziegenfuss fired a shot into the net after connecting on a through ball from fellow freshman
Maggie Mace to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Chants.
In goal, sophomore
Hope Morrow and freshman
Kirstin Brown each saw action. Brown tallied five saves in 45 minutes of action, including three consecutive stops to keep the Eagles from adding a goal in the second half.
Coastal Carolina ended the night with a 14-11 shots advantage and a 10-1 edge on corner kicks, seven of which came in the first half.
The Chanticleers will return to the CCU Soccer Stadium and close out their exhibition portion of the schedule on Saturday, Aug. 13, as they welcome High Point to Conway. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
