CONWAY, S.C. – Set piece goals proved to be the difference for the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team on Saturday night, as the Chanticleers handed the High Point Panthers a 2-1 loss in an exhibition contest at CCU Soccer Stadium.
Junior Ella Schad tallied the Chants' first goal of the night in the 75th minute as she headed in a corner kick from teammate Lou Martinet to give the host a 1-0 lead. Just five minutes later, High Point's Bri Davis recorded the Panthers' lone goal of the contest in the 80th minute to tie the match up at 1-1.
With just three minutes left to play, Julia Ziegenfuss tallied her second goal in as many matches when the freshman headed in a corner kick from senior Megan Brouse to give CCU a 2-1 advantage.
The first half was quiet as both teams combined for just nine total shots, but HPU recorded six corner kicks in the opening 45. Brouse looked to put the Chants' on the board early as the Phoenix, Ariz. native's shot in the 12th minute sailed over the crossbar. In the 16th minute, Brouse found herself alone against the Panthers' keeper but her shot found the post.
Coastal edged High Point in total shots 14-13 but the Panthers found the advantage in corner kicks 8-7.
Sophomore Hope Morrow and graduate transfer Katelyn Kellogg each saw 45 minutes in goal and combined for five total saves in the win.
The Chanticleers now turn their sights to regular-season play, as Coastal welcomes Jacksonville to the CCU Soccer Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. ET in a non-conference matchup.
