Volleyball Continues Road Swing in Texas

Chanticleers return to HTC Center on Sept. 13

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team will head to Fort Worth, Texas to compete in the Fight in the Fort against Texas A&M, host TCU, and Memphis on Friday, Sept. 2-3.
 
The opening match against the Texas A&M Aggies will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools, while the Chants have played both TCU (1-1) and Memphis (0-1) previously. Coastal and the Horned Frogs have met twice with each squad picking up a victory, the latest being a 3-0 win for TCU in August 2017. In the lone matchup against Memphis, the Tigers swept the Chanticleers 3-0 in August of 2007.

ABOUT COASTAL
 
The Chanticleers opened the 2022 season 3-0 by sweeping all three opponents to win the Seahawk Volleyball Classic. On opening day, CCU opened with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-17) win over Davidson. Coastal began day two against the Atlantic Coast Conference's Virginia Tech Hokies with its second consecutive 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-21) win before closing out the tournament win over host UNCW 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-16).
 
Sophomore Agata Lesiak, who was named Seahawk Classic Tournament MVP, led the attack for Coastal with 35 kills, two assists, and three service aces, including a career-high 16 kills against Virginia Tech. Teammates Ella Saada and Paulina Perez Rosas were named to the all-tournament team, along with Lesiak, for their performances over the weekend. Saada combined for 27 kills, four assists, and five aces, while newcomer Perez Rosas totaled 23 kills, three assists, and a service ace. Senior setter Brigitta Petrenko closed out the weekend with 84 total assists, 12 kills, and seven service aces. Petrenko's seven service aces moved the Eger, Hungary native, to fifth all-time (153), just ahead of Amy  Bambanek (1994-97) and 29 away from claiming the top spot currently held by Jennifer Hampton (181)
 
Defensively, Coastal Carolina totaled 20 blocks as a team, highlighted by Nyla Shepherd with 10 total blocks, Christina Nance with seven blocks, and Saada with six blocks. Defensive specialist Lina Perugini totaled 45 digs in the three opening matches giving the Bethlehem, Pa. native 1,246 career digs. Perugini needs just 28 more to pass Chelsy Kimes (2007-10) for 10th on the all-time list.
 
ABOUT TEXAS A&M
 
Texas A&M began the season 1-2 having, hosted the Texas A&M Invitational last weekend. In the opening match, the Aggies defeated Hawaii 3-2 on Friday, Aug. 26, before dropping the next two contests to the nationally-ranked teams of No. 25 San Diego (0-3) and No. 6 Pitt (0-3).
 
A&M's offense is paced by Caroline Meuth with 40 kills, four assists, and three service aces, along with Logan Lednicky with 36 kills, one assist, and a service ace. Elena Karakasi finished the opening weekend with 82 assists, six kills, and two service assists.
 
Defensive specialist Lauren Hogan has 49 digs for the Aggies, while Madison Bowser leads the team with nine total blocks. Molly Brown and Lednicky have added eight and seven blocks, respectively.
 
ABOUT TCU
 
The Horned Frogs enter the Fight in the Fort with a 0-2 overall record having been swept by nationally-ranked No. 3 Wisconsin and No. 5 Minnesota in the Big 12/Big 10 Challenge.
 
TCU's offense is led by Julia Adams (22) and Cecily Bramschreiber (15) as the only two players with double-digit kills. Setter Callie Williams has 24 assists with fellow setter McKenzie Nichols aiding 21 assists. Bramschreiber and Williams have combined for three service aces overall to lead the team.
 
Defensively, Bramschreiber (16) and Keagan Polk (15) lead the team in digs, while Madilyn Cole has five of the team's seven blocks.
 
ABOUT MEMPHIS
 
The Memphis Tigers enter play at 3-1 on the year with victories coming against Nicholls, Eastern Washington, and Southern.
 
Jasmyn Tate (48), Miaya Smith (46), Tabytha Toelke (36), and Kate Bass (24) lead the Tigers' offensive attack with 20 or more kills each. Bailey Houlihan and Tate have six service aces apiece, while Loren Robertson has aided on 159 points.
 
On the defensive side, Smith and Bass each have 13 blocks as Houlihan (68), Robertson (53), Toelke (37), Gigi Crescenzo (34), and Tate (33) have more than 30 digs each.
