Chants to face App State, Thursday
CONWAY, S.C. – On the opening night of Sun Belt Conference play, the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team battled conference newcomer James Madison but ultimately fell 1-0 at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Friday night.
With the loss, the Chanticleers drop to 1-5-2 overall and 0-1-0 in SBC play while the Dukes now sit at 5-2-2 overall and 1-0-0 in league action.
Both teams looked to attack early, as James Madison's Lizzie Gillen recorded the first shot of the match in the fifth minute, which went wide of the goal. Coastal Carolina's Megan Brouse fired the Chants' first shot of the night towards the goal in the 12th minute but had it scooped up by the Dukes' goalkeeper.
Gianna Irungaray fired the Chanticleers' best chance of the first half from the top of the box in the 33rd minute, which forced JMU's Alexandra Bloom to make the leaping save and tip the ball over the crossbar to keep the match scoreless.
The first half of action was a back-and-forth affair as both teams tallied just four shots a piece in the opening 45 minutes.
Much like the first half, the Dukes took the first shot of the second half as Sophia Verrecchia's shot trickled wide past the left side of the goal in the 50th minute.
Five minutes later, JMU's Lidia Nduka found the back of the net on a pass from teammate Amanda Attanasi in the 55th minute. Nduka took the pass and fired a shot past a diving Coastal goalkeeper Hope Morrow and fired her shot into the right side of the goal to put the Dukes up 1-0.
Coastal returns to the road to take on Appalachian State on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. ET, at Appalachian Soccer Stadium at the Ted Mackroell Soccer Complex in Boone, N.C.
