CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina men's tennis opened up its 2022 fall slate with the Battle at the Beach Hidden Duals on Friday, Sept. 23, totaling 11 wins versus the College of Charleston on day one of play at the Lynn Stevens Tennis Complex.
"I was pleased with the effort and approach on the court today," stated head coach
Chris Powers. "We are still building with this new group, but they competed well, and I am really looking forward to seeing how we respond as a program to a different opponent tomorrow."
The Chants won 11 matches overall versus the Cougars, including a clean 4-0 sweep in doubles play.
The team of
Steve Mundt and
Carlos Berna Ruiz held on to win 7-6 (5) at the No. 1 flight, while the duo of
Maj Tomac and
Lucas Wayenburg won 7-5 at flight No. 2.
The other two bouts were blowouts, as
Guilherme Toresan and
Ryuya Ata blanked their opponents 6-0 at No. 3, while the tandem of
Rivers Cahill and
Neil O'Connor cruised to a 6-1 victory at the No. 4 spot.
In singles play, Cahill won 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 8 spot, while O'Connor (6-2, 6-1), Tomac (6-3, 6-3), and Mundt (6-4, 6-3) won easily in straight sets in flights No. 5-7.
The other three wins came in highly-contested matches, as Wayenburg held on to win 7-6, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot, while both Ata and Berna Ruiz used three sets to score their victories. Ata bounced back from a second-set 6-3 loss to dominate the third and final set in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 win on court No. 2, while at flight No. 4, Berna Ruiz refused two quit, battling back from a 6-3 first-set loss to take the match 3-6, 7-6 (5), 10-5.
The Chants will return to action tomorrow at 9 a.m. ET at the Lynn Stevens Tennis in Conway, S.C.
