Chanticleers to Travel to App State for SBC Play

Coastal Carolina volleyball team began conference play with a 2-0 record

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team will take to the road for the Chanticleers' second Sun Belt Conference matchup of the season, as the Chants will travel to Boone, N.C., for a pair of road contests against Appalachian State on Thursday, Sept. 29, and Friday, Sept. 30, as both matches will begin at 6 p.m. ET.
 
HISTORY BETWEEN COASTAL & APP STATE
 
Coastal and the Mountaineers have met 21 times since September of 1988, with CCU holding a 16-5 all-time series advantage. The Chants are riding a nine-match winning streak over App State and have only dropped two matches and have only dropped two matches to the Mountaineers since Coastal joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2016-17.
 
CCU closed out the 2021 regular season with a 3-1 (25-11, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22) home win over the Mountaineers in the last meeting on Nov. 14, 2021. It was the 18th win for the Chants in the 2021 season, marking the eighth time in 10 seasons under head coach Jozsef Forman that Coastal had recorded 18 wins or more in a single season.   
 
ABOUT COASTAL
 
The Chanticleers are 10-5 overall and 2-0 in Sun Belt play on the season, having swept Georgia State in both matchups last weekend to extend their winning streak to 17 consecutive games over the Panthers. Outside hitters Paulina Perez Rosas and Jasmine Rivest led the Chants' offense with 19 kills over the weekend, while setter Brigitta Petrenko tallied 57 assists, a pair of kills, and five service aces. Defensively, CCU blocked a combined 19 shots as Christina Nance finished with four blocks in each match for a total of eight blocks on the weekend.
 
The Chants' offense is led by Perez Rosas with 153 kills on the year, while Agata Lesiak has added 114 spikes. Petrenko is the team's assist and service ace leader, as the Eger, Hungary, native has 460 assists and 26 service aces in the first 15 matches this year. Petrenko's 26 service aces for the season have her only 10 shy from setting a new program record for career aces.
 
Defensively, Coastal Carolina has totaled 131 blocks as a team, highlighted by Nance with a total of 48 blocks, Nyla Shepherd with 36 blocks, and Petrenko and Lesiak with 27 and 25 blocks, respectively. Perugini has picked up 239 digs in the 52 sets played giving the Bethlehem, Pa., native 1,440 career digs. Perugini surpassed Katherine Jensen-Spencer (2003-05) for sixth on the all-time list and is 23 shy of Katherine Jensen-Spencer (2003-05) for fifth all-time.
 
ABOUT APP STATE
 
App State will enter play this weekend with a 7-6 overall record and is 0-2 in conference action. The Mountaineers were swept in both matches against Sun Belt newcomer James Madison last weekend.
 
As a team, Appalachian State has recorded 610 kills, 567 assists, and 83 service aces on the offensive attack. McCall Denny leads the attack with 138 spikes, while Maya Winterhoff and Lulu Ambrose have put down 113 and 109 kills, respectively. Setters Sophie Cain and Sam Bickley lead the team with 273 and 231 assists, respectively, while Bickley (16), Denny (14), and Winterhoff (14) have 44 of the Mountaineers' 83 service aces.
 
Defensively, App State has stopped 102.0 kill attempts while also digging 738 of the opponent's shots. The net is protected by Winterhoff (50), Madison Baldridge (28), and Sarah Missroon (25), as they are the only Mountaineers with 25 or more blocks on the season, while Denny (21) and Meghan Dobrowski (18) have combined for 39 blocks. Defensive specialist Kenady Roper leads the team with 199 digs, along with McCall, who has added 123 digs on the year.
