CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team opened up the 2023 spring slate with not one, but two road wins at in-state foe The Citadel on Monday in Charleston, S.C.
The Chants (2-0) suffered just two losses over 15 total matches, including going a perfect 3-0 in doubles play on the day.
Match 1: Coastal Carolina 6, The Citadel 1
Coastal opened up its 2023 season with a dominating 6-1 win over The Citadel in the first of two matches on Monday.
The Chants swept the doubles bouts to take a 1-0 lead.
The 2022 all-conference duo of
Steve Mundt and
Carlos Berna Ruiz defeated the Bulldogs tandem of Hayden Shoemake and Lucas Robins 6-4 at the top flight. CCU's other two teams won by score of 6-1 and 6-2, as the team of
Ryuya Ata and
Maj Tomac won in flight No. 2, while the pair of
Guilherme Toresan and
Lucas Wayenburg were victorious at flight No. 3.
In singles play, the Chants were victorious in flights No. 2-6, winning four of the five matches in straight sets.
Mundt cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Bradley Minnich at the No. 6 flight, while Tomac won 6-2, 6-1 at flight No. 5 over Ted Bagwell.
The other two straight-set wins came at the No. 2 and 3 flights, as Berna Ruiz held off Sebastian Kamieniecki 6-2, 7-6 for the victory on court No. 2, while Wayenburg defeated Zvonko Bencedic 6-3, 6-4 on court No. 3.
CCU's fifth singles win of the first match of the day was by
Neil O'Connor, who bounced back from a first-set loss to beat Robins in three sets 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 on court No. 4.
Match 2: Coastal Carolina 5, The Citadel 1
In match two, the Chants once again won five of the six singles bouts to earn a 5-1 win. The two teams did not play doubles due to the match being decided in singles play.
Just like in the first match of the day, the Chants' lone loss came at the No. 1 singles flight.
At flight No. 2, Ata earned his first win of the spring with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Kamieniecki, while Toresan dominated in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Robins on court No. 3.
Tomac improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Bencedic on court No. 4, while Mundt also moved to 2-0 to start the spring slate with a 6-7 (4), 6-0, 6-2 victory on court No. 5 over Bagwell.
True freshman
Rivers Cahill picked up his first win of the spring season with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Tucker Hendrix on court No. 6.
The Chants will remain on the road to take on South Carolina State on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m. ET in Orangeburg, S.C.
