Men's Basketball Jumps Back Into Conference Action

Chants will play at JMU on Thursday and host ODU on Saturday

CONWAY, S.C. – After three consecutive home games, the Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team will return to the road for a Sun Belt Conference contest at James Madison on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. ET at the Atlantic Union Bank Center in Harrisonburg, Va., before coming back home to host Old Dominion on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 4 p.m. ET at the HTC Center.

Coastal enters the conference action with a 10-10 overall record and is tied for sixth in the Sun Belt Conference with a 4-4 conference ledger, only two games out of first place in the regular-season standings.

James Madison enters the home game with CCU on Thursday night boasting a 13-8 overall record and is tied with the Chanticleers in conference action with a 4-4 SBC record.

Old Dominion enters this week's action at 11-9 overall and 3-5 in conference action, just one game back of CCU, Appalachian State, and James Madison, and only three games out of first place.

LAST TIME OUT

After earning overtime wins in consecutive Sun Belt Conference games last week, the Chants hosted a well-rested Chicago State team in a rare non-conference midseason matchup. The Cougars, who had not played in 10 days, were able to take advantage of a Coastal team playing its third game in five days.

It was another close game, but this time the Chants fell to the visitors 74-70. Josh Uduje continued his torrid scoring pace with a game-high 25 points, giving him 84 total points scored over the three-game homestand. Uduje was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.

HISTORY BETWEEN COASTAL AND JAMES MADISON

Thursday's action will be the first time the teams have faced each other as members of the Sun Belt Conference, with the Dukes joining the Sun Belt this season. However, it will not be the first time the programs have faced each other on the hardcourt, as JMU won a close, high-scoring 100-95 affair back in 1987 in the only meeting between the two teams. That game was also played in Harrisonburg, Va.

HISTORY BETWEEN COASTAL AND OLD DOMINION

The two teams have met three times on the hardcourt with the Monarchs holding a slim 2-1 edge in the series. ODU and CCU met back on Jan. 12 in Norfolk, Va., with the Chants holding on for a 67-66 victory. Linton Brown hit three free throws with 1.4 seconds left on the clock, providing the final points in the come-from-behind victory. CCU trailed 50-38 with just over nine minutes left in the game but started chipping into the lead until Brown's heroics pulled out the win.

ABOUT COASTAL

The Chanticleers began a three-game homestand with Sun Belt Conference overtime wins over Appalachian State (93-84) and South Alabama (85-81).

Playing three games in five days turned out to be too much for the Chants in falling to Chicago State 74-70 in another close game on Monday. CCU has now been involved in seven games this season that have been decided by four points or less.

CCU is led by surging sophomore Josh Uduje, who is coming off a week that saw him score 84 points in three games, including a 29.5 points per game average in the two overtime conference wins. For his play last week, he was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon by the league office.

ABOUT JAMES MADISON

Like the Chants, the Dukes are 2-1 over their last three games and are coming off an 83-70 road loss at Southern Miss.

JMU leads the conference in scoring at 84.5 points per game. Vado Morse leads a well-balanced scoring attack with 13.0 points per game. Terrence Edwards is averaging 12.3 points per game followed by Takal Molson's 11.0 points per game and Mezie Offurum at 10.4 points per game.

ABOUT OLD DOMINION

Tyreek Scott-Grayson is the Monarchs' leading scorer averaging 15.0 points per game. Chaunce Jenkins is averaging 13.8 points per game, while Ben Stanley is averaging 10.4 points per game.

ODU has won just one of its past four games and is coming off a 72-58 home loss to Appalachian State.
