Chants Suffer Heartbreaking Loss to USC

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat to the USC Gamecocks after conceding a last-minute winner in Columbia, S.C., on Friday night.

With the loss, the Chants fall to 3-8-3, 1-5-2 Sun Belt, while USC improves to 5-7-3, 3-3-2 Sun Belt.

CCU dominated the opening 10 minutes, but misfortune struck for the Chants when USC whipped the ball into the box and CCU's Robert Valmarsson's clearance attempt found the back of his own net to give the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead.

USC looked to extend its lead in the 15th minute, but Coastal keeper Kilian Vallant made two huge back-to-back saves to hold the score at 1-0.

The Chants leveled the score in the 23rd minute when Doug Hainer slotted the ball to Eythor Kjartansson running down the right wing. Kjartansson then crossed the ball to the back post where Noe Santos buried a volley into the back of the net to make the score 1-1.

Over the next 20 minutes, Coastal was outshot 4-1 with both teams forcing one save from the keepers.

The Chants tried to pull ahead in the 41st minute when Hainer laced a shot on goal, but USC's Ben Alexander made a strong save to keep the score at 1-1 at the end of the first frame.

In the 57th minute of action, USC regained the lead when Jordon Illian headed the ball into the top right corner off an assist from Harrison Myring and Damola Salami to make the score 2-1.

USC's Salami tried to net a goal of his own in the 69th minute when he flicked the ball past Hainer to set up a one-on-one situation versus the Coastal keeper. Salami then ripped the ball up the middle, but it was met by the safe hands of Vallant to keep the score at 2-1.

Just three minutes later Salami scored his first career goal when he netted USC's third goal of the match of an assist from Illian to put the Gamecocks up 3-1.

The Chants answered right back in the 72nd minute when Christian Cook fed the ball to Hainer who drilled the ball across the six-yard box. Deryn Armstrong's outstretched leg knocked the ball into the goal to narrow the gap to 3-2.

Coastal continued to fight and equalized in the 87th minute when Eythor Kjartansson scored a screamer into the top right corner off a free kick to level the score at 3-3.

With just 34 seconds left on the clock the Gamecocks made a fast break when Ethan Dekal Daks passed the ball on to Illian on the right sideline. The freshman then cut into the box and chipped the ball over Vallant's head to give USC the 4-3 win.

The Chanticleers will conclude the regular season at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Oct. 31 versus Georgia State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
