CONWAY, S.C. – Freshman guard
Dalanna Carter scored a season-high 15 points to lead five players in double figures for Coastal Carolina as the Chants pulled away for an easy 78-60 win over Charleston Southern in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday afternoon at the HTC Center.
Makaila Cange and
Arin Freeman had 13 points apiece, while
Riley Stack had 12 and
Tiara Abron added 10 for the Chants, who improved to 3-2 on the season with their third consecutive win despite playing without their leading scorer
Deaja Richardson (16.5 ppg). Stack made the most of her 20 minutes on the court with a season high in both points and rebounds (6).
"We got off to a slow start, but they did a good job of responding. I almost ran out of time outs," said Coastal head coach
Kevin Pederson, who called two time-outs in the first five minutes of action after his team fell behind 12-3. "I told them, I'll use all the time-outs I've got, but I'm not going to watch bad defense."
Charleston Southern jumped out to an early 17-8 lead before Coastal turned on a pressing defense that ignited a 17-3 run over the next seven minutes that propelled the Chants to 25-20 lead early in the second quarter. CCU would hold the lead the rest of the way.
Coastal took control in the second period, going on a 16-3 run from the start of the session as the Chants built a 34-23 lead before the Buccaneers answered with a late three-pointer to make it 34-26 at halftime. Stack had the last five points on the run, but she wasn't finished.
She added the next five points to start the third quarter and then added an assist that led to Coastal running out to a 41-29 advantage just two minutes into the quarter. The Chants stretched their lead to 18 points at 47-29 and then coasted the rest of the way.
"How about Stack," said Pederson of his 6'4" freshman reserve center, who had scored just six points in the first four games. "She is so skilled and has so much potential. She is a zone buster and can block shots. She sure made the most of her minutes."
Coastal had eight players score and finished 29-of-61 (47 percent) from the field. The Chants also had a 43-34 rebounding advantage, with Cange and
Alancia Ramsey leading the way with nine boards apiece. CCU's defense also caused 29 turnovers and held Charleston Southern to 36 percent shooting (20-of-55)
Coastal will take to the road for a matchup with UNCW on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m. ET before returning home to face the College of Charleston on Saturday, Dec. 2. The Chants will also be home against UNC Pembroke on Dec. 10 against UNC Pembroke. That will only be the second home contest in the first 14 games for CCU and its last until the new year.
