LAREDO, Texas. – The Coastal Carolina University's men's golf team shot a one-under 287 in the first round of the 2023 Border Olympics on Monday at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas, to finish the first round of competition in second place. The second round was started but was suspended due to darkness.
Seth Taylor (35-34) led the Chants in the opening round with a three-under 69. Taylor started the day with a bogey on the first hole of play and finished the rest of the round at four-under over the final 17 holes.
Tyler Gray (35-36) and
Garrett Cooper (35-36) each shot a one-under 71 in the day's opening round. Gray's start was the same as Taylor's, with a bogey on the opening hole. He then proceeded to shoot two-under on the final 17 holes and ran off 14 consecutive pars.
Owen Kim (40-36) shot a four-over 76 in the opening round, while
Trey Crenshaw (41-37) finished the first round with a 78.
Baylor is the clubhouse leader after the first round with a five-under 283. Several holes still need to be completed in the second round to start Tuesday's action before the start of the third and final round.
CCU and Sam Houston State are tied for second after each turned in a one-under 287. Sun Belt Conference member ULM is fourth with a one-over 289, followed by New Mexico State (+2, 290).
The host team, Houston, is sixth after a three-over 291, with Louisiana Tech (+4, 292), Rice (+5, 293), Illinois State (+6, 294), and Michigan (+9, 297) rounding out the top 10.
The rest of the field includes Wright State (+10, 298), Western Carolina (+11, 299), Bowling Green (18, 306), Lamar (+19, 307), Miami (OH) (+21, 309), Houston Christian (+22, 310), and UT-Rio Grande Valley (+26, 314).
Play is scheduled to tee off tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. ET. The third round will the begin at 9:45 a.m. ET. Fans can follow the live scoring at
