BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Highlighted by a pair of third-place finishes from thrower
Zayna Fray-Samuel and the distance medley relay team of
Amilia Wise-Sweat,
Brianna Tillman, Ella Lehmann, and
Molly Jones, and a school record performance by senior
Nikki Boon, the Coastal Carolina women's indoor track & field team ended day one in sixth-place overall in the team standings.
Coastal Carolina is tied for sixth overall with Texas State with 17 points.
Arkansas State leads the women's team field with 32 points, ahead of South Alabama (25), ULM (22), Southern Miss (20), and Marshall (19).
Sophomore Fray-Samuel picked up a bronze medal in the women's weight throw event with a third-place finish and a new personal-best distance of 18.54 meters. Her mark was also the second-best on CCU's indoor track & field all-time performance list.
The DMR relay team of Wise-Sweat, Tillman, Lehmann, and Jones earned a bronze medal overall with their third-place time of 11:55.42. The time is the fourth-best in CCU history.
Boon just missed out on medaling in the women's pentathlon event, as she placed fourth overall with 3,722 points. Her 3,722 total points were a new CCU school record.
Over the five pentathlon events, Boon finished first in the 800-meters (2:22.33), second in the shot put (11.87m), third in the long jump (5.50m), sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.94), and 12th in the high jump (1.53m).
Qualifying for the finals on Tuesday were six Chants over nine events on the track.
Sophomore
Alexis Glasco qualified for the finals on Tuesday in three different events. She placed first overall in the 60-meter hurdles prelims with a time of 8.19, just one-hundredth of a second off her school record. She also finished second in the 60-meter dash prelims with a personal best time of 7.40 and third in the 200-meter prelims with a time of 23.63.
Junior
Sydney Clemens also qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.40 in the prelims, crossing the finish line in third overall, while classmate
Kayla Sweeney reached the finals on Tuesday with an eighth-place finish and a time of 7.50 in the 60-meter dash prelims.
Sweeny also qualified for the finals in the 200-meters, matching her personal-best time of 24.17 to place eighth overall in the prelims, while
Lauren Gordon qualified for the 400-meter finals with a time of 56.43 in the preliminaries, good enough for seventh overall.
In the distance events, Jones raced to a fourth-place showing in the 1-mile run preliminaries with her time of 4:58.37 to qualify for the finals, while Wise-Sweat crossed the finish line in eighth place overall in the 800-meter preliminaries with a time of 2:15.98 to qualify for the finals on Tuesday.
Also competing on day one of the conference championship meet for the Chants on Monday was sophomore
Lauralyn Clifford, who placed 10th overall in the women's weight throw event with a mark of 17.16 meters, while in the long jump event, CCU had five competitors compete in
Destiny St. Cyr (5.50m),
Keiran Martin (5.38m),
Mia Lewis (5.33m),
Claire Spiller (5.28m), and Boon (5.23m).
First-year Chant
Amanda Kinloch placed 11th overall in the 60-meter hurdle prelims with a time of 8.66, while in the 400-meters
Amaryah White (57.20) and
Amelia Canetto (57.67) finished 15th and 17th, respectively, and ahead of Tillman (58.30) in 22nd-place.
Day two of the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships will continue tomorrow at 11:20 a.m. ET.
